Starting issue

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an intermittent starting
issue with my 2002 Grand Am.
Most of the time it starts right up.
New starter, new battery and well
maintained. However, sometimes
when I start it I can hear the
starter motor engage and as the
engine turns over it seems to
struggle for a second and then
start. I am thinking it could be the
fuel pump, ignition coil, timing
chain, or a bad sensor
somewhere. This car is my lifeline
so I need help!!

Keep troubleshooting the battery-starter-alternator group. It is not likely to involve your fuel distribution, ignition parts or timing. It may be that your new starter is not aligned properly to the flywheel and it is binding a little is some spots. Shims are used to make certain the two parts are in alignment so maybe a shim or two between the part faces is the solution.
