Putting Se transmission in GT

Asked by Travis Jun 19, 2014 at 12:54 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am 4 Dr GT Sedan

Question type: General

I have a 99 GT and the tranny went. I purchased a low mileage used tranny for a V6 se by
accident. Will the difference in gear ratio be a problem with compatibilty? Does the ecu
need to be reflashed?

The SE and GT used different gear ratios. Will it work? Yes, but you will have poor acceleration and poor gas mileage. Not sure about flashing the ECU - the trans needs to run the program it was built for. I would put that tranny on Ebay and get the right one.
