My 97 Grand Am is Over heating

My 97  Grand Am is Over heating but the temp drops back down when I Turn Off the Heater!! What could be wrong??

It could be an electrical problem. First, check the coolant in the reservoir. Second, if you have a V6, bleed the air out. Third, find out what the temperature actually is to see if your temperature gauge is accurate..
