Driving in 4WD by mistake all summer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have accidentally been driving my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in full-time 4WD all summer. It was making strange noises- some of the time, until a friend got in to drive it and noticed it was in 4WD. I've taken it to a local shop TWICE, and they didn't say anything about it, but couldn't find anything wrong with it, or what was making the noises. It now seems to be running fine, with 197,000 miles on it. What are the possible ramifications of this? Have I ruined any particular part of my beloved Jeep?

For ten years I've had a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same 4WD system and our owners manual says it's okay to run year round on all kinds of road conditions in "Full Time 4WD". But it is NOT okay to run in "Part Time 4WD" on dry roads. Therefore, you have done no harm. If you hear a new noise, it is likely a coincidence and it may not be anything wrong anyway. But check your drivetrain fluids...both differentials, transmission and transfer case. And I would not run any 4WD mode when it's not necessary. I hope this helps.
