Taurus cranks but will not start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car cranks but wont start.  When I spray starter fluid in the air box it starts and
runs fine.  Then if I turn it off and try to start it again, it cranks but wont start.  If I
spray the starter fluid again it starts again.  I am stumped with this one.  It
obviously has good spark, And when it is running it gets fuel.  But it seems to
not get fuel until it is running....

Additional information. used starter fluid to start the car and drove it enough to get it warmed up. it drove fine. When I got back I shut it off and tried restarting it. Low and behold it restarted fine.... Waiting for it to cool off to retry starting it. If it does not restart without starter fluid I will assume computer issue is not allowing correct mixture in cold condition...

My 2002 Taurus is doing the same thing as yours Henk. Mines a 3.0 V-6. It goes like a scalded dog when it's running. What gives?? Have you found out anything?

I have an 2004 SES which was stored for about 2 years. Upon pulling it out I replaced the plugs, and battery, oh, and it smokes white under the hood the few times I've gotten it to start( but not move) ???

Ended up needing to have the computer reflashed. There is a bulletin out for that. I also needed to replace the crank sensor, it had a intermittent problem. When I removed it and put a multi tester on it, it showed as not working, then I knocked it on the workbench a few times and it showed working, then knocked it a few times more and it showed not working again... After a few months, I had fail to crank issues. I found there is another ford problem, the sensor wire on the starter (the little one connected to the starter) can get corroded. New starters come supplied with a short wire connected to the lug. You need to cut the existing one and crimp the new one on. I have had intermittent problems with that connection now when it rains....

03 Taurus crank with starting fluid and stay on after. I check fuel pressure it normal check and changed fuel filters. Cleaned the m.a.p. sensor checked crank and cam sensor. Checked all holes and found a few that need to be changed out. But when I released the flex fuel system car work fine after and never had this problem again.. to this year when it started again. The fuel pump and regulator are not get the signal from the ecu because the dam security light is flashing. So the kill system wont send the signal to the fuel pump for pressure part if the alarm kill switch also know as the anti- Thief system. Plugged in the scanner and I see the key not giving the code to the car.. so I unpluged the ecu relay have the door the key in the lock setting open the door and cranked the car twice.. I can smell the fuel.. replaced the ecu relay with the a/c relay.. the car cranked over stayed on then the cold weather hit the am and car did the same shit. When I opened the fuel system at the motor I can see jelly on the injectors #1#3#6. So I pulled all them out cleaned them all and since then I dont have this problem.. When the car did this to me i toke my rubber mallet and whacked it a few time why someone cranked it over and it started... not the fuel pump.. I've seen this problem with the happen to many fords when the key system wont send the right volt to the pump and it pressure regulator.. check your alarm system not armed why you crank.. the key have a transmitter with the car vin# key dont send the signal the alarm will kill the fuel pressure regulator and pump..
