2006 Lincoln Navigator 5.4l broke off spark plug

Asked by justamess Jan 17, 2018 at 12:44 PM about the 2006 Ford Expedition Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I cannot believe this motor. it was running strange then I saw the engine light
coming on while driving home from a trip.  I had my son try to pull the plug and
it broke off. I started to research all items. Now the glue will not dry enough to
remove and yes its cold outside everywhere in the south and midwest.
can I start my engine up enough to warm it, therefore I can turn off the engine
and apply carb spray to it? I have seen many videos where people have run
their cars with 7 cylinders for short times. Lord, I can not go through much

There are specialty tools for removing those broken plugs. Soak it overnight with penetrating oil before removing the plug. Lisle makes one. Look on Amazon for other choices.

Stop by a Ford dealership or a mechanic and have them do it for you before you screw up something else.

Well, you car enthusiast, update I rented a tool and between me and my son not only did I soak my plugs for 2 days in a penetrating oil and carburetor cleaner they still broke off every one of them. I researched it indefinitely and my problem is they are the original spark plugs from 06. yeah it appears that I got someone else's headache. now that I have successfully replaced all spark plugs and all new coils. Speaking of coils I would advise you men out there or other women who like to do your own DYI please get an OHM meter and check every one of the coils. I did it at the store with my own meter. Ford specs State 6000 is min resistance on the test. I found a brand at O'Reilly's that is 6.23 to 6.25. I bought all eight of them. They call it a spider pack for some enthusiast. yes I got a good deal on them and I bought my plugs off of Amazon. FYI again if you guys don't think that Ford wants to make money haha I purchased Ford plugs and they have a two- piece end. It is not uniform one entire piece. I guess they want to let the little spark plate fall off into your piston. I wish they would just stop playing games. my Ford online part from Amazon was one entire piece. I'm very happy with the outcome and a lot of research. Good luck in your search for your issues. I would recommend paying a few more dollars and buying the other set which Ford recommends on Amazon. Lyle makes one but the bolt and the pattern are their own I'm sure! they use a cheap Chrome nut and it will be problematic if you are not careful. Just a word to the wise and the do-it- yourselfers. I would rather do my own work then take it to Ford and have them charge me quadruple the amount. We need to be positive and help each other out correctly.

Glad you got it fixed and posted the results here. Broken plug extraction is sometimes not a good do-it-yourself job. Also I usually recommend Motorcraft coils made by Ford as some of the coils sold at the parts stores are junk. Checking the resistance is a good first step on the coils and I hope you have good luck with them. Nothing wrong with Motorcraft plugs and a little high temp anti-seize on the sleeve that protrudes into the head is a good idea. It will make them easier to remove next time.

BOB Your correct. I forgot to mention in my last post. I do believe there are many knockoff plugs. Ford made a statement. Their plugs have a signature 2 is there packaging so they can tell if it is black market or original ford. I bought my plugs again of amazon. I noticed it says motorcraft on them but the color was not quite the same on the box. They also were not in the correct package chain of original ford products. This really upsets me how a consumer buys brand name, yet gets fakes. Our world is all becoming this way. Thanks again for the reply. I'm a F 59 and try to do my own maintmainte. Next project is find the leak in my suspension. The motor kicks on at different times when it should stay pumped after I'm driving.Grrr.

I have a 06 navigator and probably 6 years ago I had to replace the faulty height sensors that pop off. That's when I found out that only ford/lincoln shops are only ones able to reset and calibrate the air suspension it was over 300. 6 months later the driver front started to lose air. When I looked up the price for just one air strut. I decided to convert it to coils. It rides a little stiffer is all. My cousin is a ford master mechanic in Oregon and showed me a trick to remove the old plugs. First thing is to run fuel injection cleaner for 100 miles. Second is soak them over night. Third is to warm the engine up to normal temperature. Fourh while the motor is hot use a impact to take them out. Worked like a charm
