is it a legal for a uk insurance company to fit a non manufacturer windscreen to a 2008 Renault Laguna.. if they choose to do this will it invalidate its 5 star ncap Rateing?

It is not illegal as all windscreens fitted by these companies are made to the same standards. It does mean however, that you may lose some of the features fitted to your vehicle such as the heat reflective coating (standard on many lagunas) or the heated screen option. you just need to make sure that they fit the same as is removed. They should be able to tell from your registration number.
