Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had one mechanic listen and he claimed it wsa the rear pinion bearing but when i had someone else look @ the rear end everything was great! You hear it when you begin to accelerate and it does get a little louder as you get faster. Has anyone else had any problems like this?

power steering pump, the pumps on chevys are notorious for making noise

We replaced the power steering pump but r still having problems, the guy who replaced it said he noticed a catch in when u turn the wheel even after the new pump, he said something about a gear box? I don't know I just wish the whinning would stop!

could also be the alternator - to verify this, disconnect the plug on the rear of the alternator - just for a short time - see if the noise changes - also could be a drive belt pulley bearing.

i have that problem as well on my 97 1500 chevy z71 4/4 but no one seems to know really what it is, i was told my a friend that it were the power steering unit clutch and this were pretty common.

does it happen when the engine speeds up and down or just with road speed?

could be a hole in your air cleaner, or a plugged air filter and the air is forcing itselft past, had a couple trucks do it with small cracks in teh air box, sounds like a turbo spooling up. Its entirely possible that it could be the torque converter as well. If thats going it will wine more with hard accelleration or normal, just the pitch will vary. Could also be an idler pulley or even your a/c compressor. I would take a long screw driver and put the metal end to the block, compressor, alternator, and so on and put the handle to your ear, hopefully you can hear something.
