if it will not go off it might be that you created another problem or you didn't fix the problem

"....YOU created another problem..." ?? Good gawd the person was asking a question, and you say that? For one thing once the problem is fixed in an EVAP system the CEL will go off on it's own you don't have to have any DTC's erased.

Ahhh that sounds better.. Do you know if I just replaced gas cap a few hours ago and that is the problem, would cel go off right away? Just trying to go the cheapest vway possible before taking it to mechanic...

It might take a while...as in several start/shut off cycles. Or until the EVAP canister is fully purged. Or you can disconnect the battery (Neg-cable) for about 10 minutes, then it might rung rough for a few minutes while the ECU 're-learns' but that is normal and expected. If the CEL remains on after that there might be a problem with another part of the EVAP..the charcoal canister, the purge valve, several things. If so an OBDII scan is called for. Many large parts houses will scan it free, and give you a code that begins with 'P' followed by 4 numbers. If you do that bring the code)s) back here for more help. or you can Google it yourself, Google OBD Pxxx (then the make of your car)-- and you will get a page that explains the causes and solutions

Replaced a faulty gas cap on a 2005 Ion and it (engine light) went off by itself.
