what is the typical shift pattern for a 1965 VW beetle

I bought a VW trike and don't know the actual shift pattern. most of what I have
been able to find says 1st if left forward second straight back 3rd forward to the
right and 4th straight back with reverse over to the left and back. Well I know
where reverse is but switch is 1st forward or back to the left

Normally it is left forward. You will know when you shift it into the position if it takes off easy.

Straight back left would be second, forward right third, back again to 4th.
