I am trying to check an alternator on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta. If I take the battery cables off battery while car is running should the car still run if alternator is bad?

After car is running, remove the "Positive" cable...Car runs=Good Alt....No Run=Bad

Ok we did that and it ran but he also unplugged something from alternator with cables still undone and the car still ran. Can you please help tell me what might be the problem Thank you
