What is the make and model? So, the car is in park now, correct? Did the car start up, is idling but you cannot shift it into D or R? There is not a lot if information to go by, so sorry for the questions.

Hey sorry about that my car starts no problem it's a 2006 automatic Volkswagen Passat. It will start no problem Idols normally but I can't get the gear shifter to go out of park now I can get it to move if I override it and take the casing off the gear shifter and press the reset button. But I can't do that every single time there's a reason why it's doing this it was never doing it before could it be a fuse because I know the guy that originally was looking at the car was messing around with my fuses and it hasn't worked since then

There are things that lock the shifter that could indeed be tied to electrical switches and connections, so yes, it is possible. If the brake light switch goes bad, or the shift interlock solenoid (if it has one) go bad, for instances, the shifter could lock in the way you are experiencing - especially if you are able to over ride it the way you are. Check the fuses, since someone was messing in that area.
