Odometer light

Asked by GuruDSKKT Aug 29, 2017 at 03:11 AM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Bought a 2005 dodge ram 1500. The battery
keeps going dead after sitting 2 days. The
odometer light stays on all the time. I this
normal? I don't think so. Had battery, and
alternator checked, supposed to be good.
Trying to get any ideas how to fix issue.
Battery is getting drained down. I think the
culprit is the odometer light,  any help would
be great

Yes... the odometer light should go off. could be something as simple as a defective light switch...I would try rattling the switch while turning it on and off...take notice of the odometer light while doing so. if you can get it to come on and off or flicker you just found your problem... Worst case would be a short in the wires somewhere between the switch and the odometer light itself...If this is the case you have to locate the wires responsible for supplying power to the Instrument panel and track them from the switch to the back of the Instrument panel...wiggle the wire harness along its entire length all the while keep an eye on the light.. (Light switch should be in the off position) Unless somebody's been under the dash messing with the wires the lIght switch is the most likely culprit.
