Brand new battery dying

Asked by thomas Mar 27, 2020 at 09:12 PM about the 2002 Buick Century

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My battery keeps dying. I noticed that when it was running
that when I accelerated the battery light would come on in
the dash but when I was sitting idle at a stoplight it would
go off. I let it sit overnight and it was dead in the morning.
same thing when I let it sit for 8 hours at work

Yes, it sounds like the alternator is overcharging the battery at higher engine RPMs. The red battery light will come on when the alternator is not charging OR when the alternator is overcharging! Smell around the battery area too. If you smell something like rotten eggs, the battery has been overcharged and will need to be replaced too! Hope that helps! Jim
