4.0 V6 questions

Asked by rodbuilder Jan 07, 2016 at 11:11 AM about the 2006 Ford Mustang

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was an engine builder years ago, way before the automakers decided to screw up our cars with all this computer crap and interference piston/valve train designs.

That said, with the 2006 Ford V6 is this this an interference-type engine? That is to say - if you bow a timing chain will the piston hit the valves and trash the head?

I just bought one that's not running and need a place to start looking, if it has spark and is getting fuel. but still won't run.

Thanks.

So yes the 4.0 is an interference engine and you probably have bent valves. From what I have read, might as well rebuild the hole thing. Timing chain issues from original have now ben upgraded. But it sounds like the motor is a piece of crap. Not durable.

Yes it is an interference engine and most likely if it got out of time, your valves were damaged. This particular engine has a timing chain in the back of the engine head (passanger side) that forces you to pull the engine out just to do timing chain replacement. This engine has a total of 5 timing chains and complicated to replace without special tools

How do you set the timing on a 2006 4.o mustang the skyway came out and the front timing sprocket slip on crankshaft

There should be a class action suit brought against Ford for designing an engine that needs to be pulled just to do something as common as a timing chain.
