Used Subaru Forester questions

Asked by Nere4817 Oct 17, 2016 at 03:08 PM about the 1998 Subaru Forester

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm looking at a used Subaru Forester and wanted
to know what I should be asking the owner. I asked
about the head gaskets and the timing belt and he
said at 120k miles. The car now has over 170k.
When do you typically have to replace those?

1 Answer

If the job was done correctly then the timing belt should be good for a 100,000 miles from the time of replacement. The head gaskets may go a lot longer but be sure and use the Subaru brand anti-leak in the radiator. Make sure they changed the idler wheels and water pump when they did the head gasket. If not something will likely fail before the belt is due for a change.
