Battery charging system fail

Today Battery charging system failure light came
on. Steering wheel got tight ,Then my temperature
needle shot all the way up to red car began
smoking.

Sounds like your serpentine belt or tensioner came off or broke. That belt powers all these functions and they would all stop at about the same time. Be careful, do not overheat those aluminum head engines.
