It's the float inside the actual fuel pump in the tank that controls the gas gauge reading. It's not hard to fix but you may just need a new fuel pump if it is inside the tank. It is not cheap to fix. Just write down your mileage when you fill up and then go say 100 miles and then fill up and see how many gallons it takes. My mother's Ford Elite's gas gauge stopped working and she never ran out of gas as she would watch her mileage and go fill up when necessary. You may not want to dump a lot of money in your car if you don't have it right now to dump. You can get an estimate on how much to fix. There may be a Youtube video on how to change out your fuel pump and if not too complicated have your BF or hubby fix.
