2014 hyundai sonata denied for engine replacement

Asked by 777Kaytee Oct 15, 2022 at 01:03 PM about the 2014 Hyundai Sonata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata and the engine seized. The car has 170,000
miles on it. Car VIN qualifies it for the recall which would give me a new
engine. Hyundai is denying saying pure synthetic oil changes need to be
done every 3000 miles not every 10,000 miles which is what I did. They say
poor oil change maintenance is why they denied. They also say it isnt a
recall on the car but a warranty extension. Does this sound like a run
around?

Contact the BBB in your area, you may need to provide proof of normal service intervals.

Hyundai recommends conventional oil changes at three to five thousand miles. and synthetic at 7,500 to 10,000 miles. The larger intervals are for light duty conditions, which nobody sees. The shorter intervals are for heavier duty which applies to virtually everyone. Hyundai likely told you that synthetic required 7,500 which you did not do and you're not going to win this..... You got 170,000 miles out of a Hyundai; a LOT of people don't get near that with Korean cars. Suck it up, dump that car and go shopping for a replacement. And please choose more wisely.

Nobody is going to warranty or honor a recall on a vehicle with 170,000 miles on it. Its already exceeded its life expectancy. You can bet they took a sample of the oil that's in the engine and had it analyzed. They know exactly what kind of oil is in there and probably have a good idea of the last time it was changed. On average you have driven this vehicle over 21,000 miles per year. Not light duty usage. Normal mileage per year is 10 to 15 thousand. Even if you did do the oil changes by the book they'd come up with another reason to deny your claim. Oil changes not done by the Dealer, improper maintenance done by someone other than the Dealer, wrong grade of gasoline used, cooling system not properly maintained, you name it, they'll claim it! The bottom line is you need to replace a vehicle that's just worn out! Jim

Check this out. The BBB says Hyundai cannot deny the fix unless there is EXCEPTIONAL negligance. The BBB has an arbitration page for issues like this. Here's what part of it says, "The Class Action Settlement provides that no Lifetime Warranty inspection or repairs shall be denied for a Class Vehicle on the grounds that the Qualifying Repair was necessitated by the owner or lessor failing to properly service or maintain the vehicle, except in instances of Exceptional Neglect."
