Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Asking for my daughter

How to check the transmission fluid level on this manual transmission.
Is the clutch hydrohalic?
What type of fluid does it take gear oil ?
How to service and check clutch?
Is failure eminent if I hear a hum in 3rd gear and higher?

The hum is probably from one of the bearings in the tranny , A clutch is " serviced " by replacement , The clutch is more than likely hydraulic . What problem are you having ?

Only noise right now but it is annoying . Would low fluid level possibly cause ? There are no apparent leaks but how does one check the fluid level , what is the fluid, and how to add if necessary? Is there an additive that could help? Car is coming up on 100k. I saw there might be a half shaft recall could that create a hum in 3rd gear and higher . How do I check if the car is part of the recall and if it has been addressed ? Do you think I should sell the car ? Thank you ?

For fluid level there may be a plug screwed into the side of the tranny , Remove it and generally if your pinky comes out wet it is full . The owners manual may have the gear oil type or you can google it , there is no mechanic in a can , A worn half shaft can click when spun or vibrate on acceleration from my experience .When the clutch goes or other major problem occurs trade it in for something else .

It sounds as if you're in an area where maybe you shouldn't be. Get a good service manual and it will guide you through all the questions you have. But if you're the novice I suspect you are, it would be a LOT cheaper and safer to have this done by a mechanic. If you mess something up, or miss something that would get damaged with more use, cost could be much higher.... Cars aren't what they used to be and for the most part, if you aren't trained, you really can't do these things yourself.

Thank you both for your advice. I think next step is to check fluid level. The noie is relatively new about 3 weeks. It started after after 4 tire purchase. That and tire pressure warning. She recently had brake work done for growl. I would think the mechanic would have let her know it there was a wheel bearing problem. Don't know if he would have looked at the CV axles. She took car back to tire shop for tire pressure warning light and they suggested to rotate the tires and replace faulty sensors. If the noise changed location then tire problem if not the something else. they did not drive the car. It appears it is the something else because it did not change. The noise comes in after 3rd gear and remains constant clear through 6th gear. The car shifts fine. Although she doesn't understand why she needs to be in 6th gear in town? The gar has a shift up indicator if she doesn't So if fluid id full what is next step mechanic or a tranny shop? I hesitate to take to tranny shop because either way they are going to try to sell her tranny work? What is your opinion ?

If you're talented you can get it up to 3rd-4th gear and put it in neutral or press the clutch and see if the noise goes away , that may help isolate it . Sounds like your trouble started after johnny jerk wrench got hold of it .
