Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1968 buick wildcat with a 430 engine the car is mint with 13000 original
miles my problem is when it sits for a couple of days I have to crank the hell out
of it to get the gas to start it.  The fuel lines are fine I even installed check
valves by the tank so as to maintain fuel in the lines.  The carb has been rebuilt.

Sounds like a nice vintage ride! Have you checked the fuel filter? How about the ignition points and he timing?

There should be a squirt of gas down in the carb. barrel when you work the accelerator ( accelerator pump ) the fuel should sit in the fuel bowl to do this even after a few days . You have to pump the gas a few times to load the carb , you can't just turn the key

If the vehicle sits for just a few days between being started you should pump the accelerator pedal 3 times, fully to the floor, and it should start up. Otherwise the float bowl is leaking down or the automatic choke is not working properly. I'd suspect a leaking float bowl. I've had many 60s era GMs with a Rochester carburetor and I've had to rebuild most of them because of this problem. If the vehicle sits for weeks at a time though it's normal. The gasoline in the float bowl will evaporate. A few ounces of gasoline down the carburetor will get you going quickly. Hope that helps! Jim

maybe needs a new fuel pump ...i remember the old pump is on the engine. age could be a factor.
