Distance and Steep Grade driving
I'm looking to take my 1930 on a tour of the pacific northwest next year and
was seeing if there were any hard and fast rules about what kinds of
distances on any given trip were out of the question, and what kinds of
grades a stock 4-speed could reasonably climb with two passengers and
some luggage. Also, what kinds of grades are too steep to come DOWN,
and is coming down in 2nd gear always advisable? Thanks!
it depends on how well put together that antique is- in general, even when it was new, the brakes were marginal and would not do well coming down steep hills much less long mountain passes- maybe a brake upgrade before you go- or just stay out of the mountains or come down REAL slow- or get another kind of old car with real brakes-
