According to http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ they say that your 300SEL gets 15 mpg in the city, 17 mpg on the highway.

my 300E gets 26 on the highway and 20 in the city it has the 3.0L engine

If you buy a 3L petrol car you will never get good mpg my 300ce does somewhere between 15-20mpg. being light footed will help but not enough to make a massive difference in the economy. And if you do put your foot down you will actually be able to see the fuel gauge falling. My suggestion would be that if your looking for something thats 20+ mpg than go for a 2L or diesel car.
