There's no reason compact economy cars can't be fun to drive and stylish to look at. That's the kind of thinking that went into the 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, which got a flashier front and rear redesign, and a new look for its wheels and instrument panel, along with some new color choices. The 2000 Sunfire is sold as a sedan, coupe, and convertible. This year will be the last for the soft-top convertible.
The base SE sedan and coupe come with a 2.2-liter, 115-hp I4 engine with a new smoother 5-speed manual transmission. Both a 3 and 4-speed auto tran are optional. The GT coupe and convertible gets a DOHC 2.4-liter I4 that reaches a more impressive 150-hp. This engine is optional on the SE. All of the 2000 Sunfires come with dual front airbags, ABS brakes, and air conditioning. The coupes add a spoiler, and the GT adds a CD player. If you want power windows and locks, those are extra. New for 2000 is an optional Monsoon audio system, in another attempt by Pontiac to appeal to younger drivers who don't typically shop at GM. The GTs also get integrated foglights and leather trim for the steering wheel and shifter. A revised front console has been expanded to hold more CDs, and two cupholders and a coinholder have been added to it.
Owners of the 2000 Sunfire say the GT is the way to go. It feels fast and sporty, yet it still gets good gas mileage to maintain its economy car status. Owners say the Sunfire is a good personal car or first-time buy, and there are nice options, such as a sunroof and alloy wheel. The 12.4 cubic foot trunk is spacious for a compact. Complaints mention a cramped backseat in the coupes, a need for more power and pickup, and generally uncomfortable seats for long rides. There were also reported problems with the starter and a persistent check engine light (caused by a perpetually loose gas cap).
