The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is a premium-priced electric minivan with few true competitors. It competes with the likes of the Kia Carnival and the Honda Odyssey, and three-row electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Tesla Model Y.

What’s New for the 2028 Volkswagen ID.Buzz
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz was all-new for the 2025 model year, went on hiatus for 2026, and was originally supposed to return for 2027. Instead, it was delayed again until the 2028 model year. In other words, if the ID.Buzz goes back on sale as planned in mid-2027, it’ll have spent more than half its life on hold. During this downtime, Volkswagen has upgraded some of the features, and when it does arrive, it’ll feature updated software, vehicle-to-load charging, and a NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging port. A new Tourer version features a fold-out mattress, ventilated front windows and window blinds, a retractable tow hitch, an electrochromic roof that allows for adjustable opacity, and an overnight mode that permits some vehicle functions to work when it’s turned off and parked.
Design
The ID.Buzz is a modern interpretation of the VW Microbus. For 2028, it will be available exclusively in two-tone color schemes, which were more popular than the single-color schemes during its 2025 run, and new 21-inch wheels will be available. Much like its classic forebear, the exterior is simple, putting the focus on elements such as the wheels and badging, accented with contemporary features such as LED lighting.
Powertrain
We expect the ID.Buzz to carry over its powertrain lineup from 2025. The base version featured a single electric motor and a 91-kWh battery, rated for 282 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and a range of up to 234 miles. The available 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain featured a second electric motor, with specs of 335 hp, 512 lb-ft of torque, and up to 231 miles on a charge. Both versions were fitted with a single-speed automatic transmission.
Interior
Like most minivans, the ID.Buzz is spacious, and the sweet retro vibe gives it an edge for those who might be inclined to reminisce about good times spent in other VW vans. It seats six or seven across its three rows, depending on whether it’s fitted with captain’s chairs or a bench in the second row. As is typical of a three-row vehicle, attention to passenger comfort diminishes toward the rear. New for 2028 is a Tourer model intended to position the ID.Buzz as a lightweight yet expensive alternative to a true camper van, with a fold-out mattress, window blinds, and a table and chairs. One modern update to the classic camper recipe is a new overnight mode that enables the van to keep its occupants comfortable by providing certain exterior and interior functions even while it’s turned off. There’s also plenty of cargo room, starting with 18.6 cubic feet behind the third row and a total of 145.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.
Technology
Volkswagen has specified that the ID.Buzz will be updated with the latest version of the brand’s infotainment software. It hasn’t confirmed the rest of the spec, but we’d expect much to carry over from the 2025 model. That means the 2028 ID.Buzz is likely to feature a 5.3-inch instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless charging, eight USB ports, ambient lighting, a household-style electrical outlet, and a nine-speaker audio system. Options are expected to include a panoramic glass roof with adjustable opacity and a Harman Kardon audio system with 13 speakers.
