The new name was introduced in 2025 and, as it suggests, this is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the regular Prius hybrid, which we review separately. What’s New for the 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid
For 2027, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid carries over unchanged except for a new Nightshade trim level that mirrors the features of the Nightshade Edition available during the 2026 model year. It adds blacked-out styling elements for about $800 more on top of the mid-tier XSE trim level. There’s also a new Inked exterior color available across all trim levels.
Design
The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid shares the same small and sleek hatchback body as the regular Prius. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid features 17-inch wheels and is available with 19-inch wheels. The Nightshade trim level, which slots just below the top XSE Premium, comes with black exterior trim and black 19-inch wheels.
Powertrain
The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid features the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from the regular Prius plus two electric motors, a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It’s rated for 220 hp, which is 26 hp more than the front-wheel drive version of the regular Prius. That said, the regular Prius is available with all-wheel drive (AWD) and the plug-in hybrid version is not. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid has peppy acceleration and a well-tuned suspension system that results in a surprisingly enjoyable driving experience. Even better, it’s rated for up to 52 mpg combined in base trim, and up to 44 miles of electric range on a full charge.
Interior
The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid is a snug hatchback with seating for five, though we wouldn’t advise squeezing three adults in the second row. The front row is reasonably comfortable, but this is one of the smallest four-door cars currently on sale, and there’s no mistaking it for anything else. That said, there’s a surprising amount of cargo space, with 20.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 26.7 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Manually adjustable front seats, cloth upholstery, and a heated steering wheel come standard. Options include a power liftgate, heated front seats, heated rear seats, power-adjustable front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and a panoramic roof.
Technology
The Prius Plug-In Hybrid comes with a 7-inch digital instrument display, an 8-inch touchscreen display, and a six-speaker audio system. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard and the infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly. There are also easy-to-use physical controls for the climate control system. Toyota offers a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, a digital key, and an eight-speaker JBL stereo.
