The Toyota GR86 is one of the most satisfying cars to drive on twisty back roads for buyers who appreciate prompt throttle response and excellent driving dynamics, due to its lightweight, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) chassis and boxer engine. There have been several meaningful updates for the 2027 model year, but the comparatively affordable sticker price means it still won’t break the bank.

What’s New for the 2027 Toyota GR86
A year after receiving a bright yellow Yuzu Edition trim, the 2027 Toyota GR86 benefits from subtle tweaks that improve its throttle calibration and shift feel. The little sport coupe also gains a new Thunder Gray exterior paint color and an available Cockpit Red interior treatment with black Ultrasuede and red leather accents on the side bolsters, red floor mats, and red door accents. Toyota also tweaked the 2027 GR86’s exterior cameras for improved vehicle and object detection.
Design
There aren’t any changes to the GR86’s exterior for 2027, but that’s not a bad thing. With its long hood and short rear deck, Toyota’s 2+2 coupe looks like a proper sporting machine. Its lightweight design (Toyota quotes a figure of just 2,811 pounds for the base GR86 with a manual transmission) and low-slung chassis mean the handling matches the looks. The base GR86 comes standard with 17-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, and a Performance Package bumps them to 18 inches, while adding Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers. The GR86 Premium gets the 18-inch wheels as standard, but the brakes and dampers are still available. An optional GR Aero Kit for the Premium trim adds a front splitter, side skirts, and a rear diffuser to the GR86’s expressive exterior.
Powertrain
All 2027 Toyota GR86 models use the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. With its standard six-speed manual transmission, Toyota says the RWD GR86 can scoot from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. The optional automatic transmission comes with paddle shifters, and it runs from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. A Torsen limited-slip differential is standard across the lineup.

Interior
Considering the GR86’s size and intended use as a sports car, it’s not surprising that the driver is prioritized inside the coupe’s cabin. The two front seats are well bolstered to help hold the body in place during hard cornering, and while there are technically a pair of seats in the rear, they are very small and won’t comfortably accommodate an actual human being. For 2027, Toyota adds a Cockpit Red interior option with red leather joining black Ultrasuede on the seats, red floor mats, and red door accents. A full black interior is also available.
Technology
In addition to a 7-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver with Normal, Sport, and Track modes, the 2027 GR86 comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard, while Toyota’s Remote Connect technology, which requires either a free trial or an up-to-date subscription, allows owners to remotely start the car, lock or unlock the doors, or locate the vehicle through a smartphone or smartwatch app.
