The Solterra was the first electric vehicle released by Subaru and developed alongside the Toyota bZ EV. It shares most parts with that car, but the Solterra has unique styling front and rear and comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). The 2027 model competes with electric crossovers including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, the Tesla Model Y, and the Volkswagen ID.4.

What’s New for the 2027 Subaru Solterra
The Solterra received a significant upgrade for the 2026 model year, including a jump in range, more horsepower, faster charging, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, and updated styling. The trim lineup and starting price are unchanged for 2027, so the only change for the new model year is a shuffling of the availability of certain interior colors. Additionally, while leather upholstery was optional for the 2026 Touring XT model, it now comes standard in a two-tone black and blue color scheme.
Design
The Solterra’s exterior design is best described as blocky. The 2026 updates brought a fresh new front fascia that better matches the look of the Subaru Trailseeker and Uncharted models introduced that year. Subaru offers the Solterra in a fairly wide array of colors, some of which are paired with black trim and, optionally, a black roof. With 8.3 inches of ground clearance, standard AWD, and selectable drive mode settings for snow/dirt and deep snow/mud, the Solterra is equipped to deal with some light off-roading.
Powertrain
In Premium and Limited trims, the 2027 Subaru Solterra offers up to 233 horsepower courtesy of a pair of electric motors. Limited XT and Touring XT models benefit from an upgraded dual-motor powertrain that produces 338 hp, allowing the Solterra to accelerate from 0–60 mph in less than five seconds. Regardless of trim, all Solterra models come with a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides an estimated range of up to 288 miles. XT models with the power boost lose 10 miles of range.
Interior
The Subaru Solterra’s interior is pretty funky. A squared-off steering wheel sits in front of the driver, behind which is a small digital instrument cluster, and there's a comparatively massive screen in the center of the dashboard. There’s plenty of room inside for both front and rear passengers, and the front seats are heated. The rear seats are heated in Limited and Limited XT models, and the Touring XT model gets front-seat ventilation. The Solterra offers 23.8 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seat, which is on the small side for its segment. With the rear seats folded, the space expands to a more competitive 63.5 cubic feet.
Technology
The large 14-inch touchscreen runs modern infotainment software and is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A small 7-inch digital gauge cluster sits in front of the driver. As well as a pair of wireless chargers for front-seat passengers, there are USB-C chargers for the back seat. A six-speaker audio system is standard in Premium models and all other trim levels get a Harman Kardon system with 11 speakers.
