BMW’s M-badged vehicles are some of the most powerful and exciting machines in the world, and for fans of small coupes with big power, the BMW M2 may be the most intriguing of them all. Like the original muscle cars in the 1960s and 1970s, the M2 combines a big engine with a lightweight chassis, two doors, and impressive acceleration. What’s New for the 2027 BMW M2
BMW has blessed the M2 lineup with its advanced xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the first time in 2027. Like other M-badged performance cars with xDrive, the M2’s AWD system is tuned to prioritize rear-wheel-drive (RWD) dynamics under normal circumstances. When it detects too much rear-wheel slip, xDrive instantly sends power to the front wheels to maximize traction. The 2027 BMW M2 xDrive is available solely with an eight-speed automatic transmission and, while xDrive is big news for 2027, BMW still offers versions of the M2 with a six-speed manual transmission and RWD. Another addition for the 2027 model year is BMW’s Borusan Turkish Blue paint.
Design
The BMW M2’s exterior styling is nothing if not aggressive. It doesn’t have a huge grille like some other BMW models, but its nostrils are squared-off and filled with interesting design details. Three more massive air intakes make up the rest of the front fascia. The M2’s boxy profile, bolstered fenders, ducktail rear spoiler, and quartet of exhaust outlets complete the pugnacious look.
Powertrain
A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque comes standard in the 2027 BMW M2. Last year, a limited-edition M2 CS was offered with 523 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. At the time of writing, BMW has not confirmed that the CS will be on the options list for 2027, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be in time. The manufacturer says the M2 with xDrive is 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 than the RWD version, doing the run in a scant 3.6 seconds. The 2027 M2’s top speed of 155 mph can be increased to 177 mph by opting for the M Driver’s Package. Settings accessible through the M Setup menu allow the driver to tailor the car’s AWD system to their preferences, or even unlock a RWD mode with traction control turned off. BMW has not yet released the 2027 M2’s estimated fuel economy figures, but last year, the RWD M2 was rated at 16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined regardless of transmission. M2 models equipped with xDrive may have lower mpg numbers because AWD adds weight.
Interior
BMW equips the 2027 M2 with smart interior finishes, including standard leather upholstery in black with blue contrast stitching, black with red highlights, or black with BMW’s multi-hued M color highlights. BMW offers two aluminum trim options along with an optional carbon fiber package. An Alcantara-covered steering wheel is optional, and optional M Carbon seats increase bolstering and have integral head restraints. There is a pair of rear seats, but they're quite small.
Technology
A 14.9-inch touchscreen display running the latest BMW Operating System 8.5 with an M Interface comes standard. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant understands numerous voice commands for those who prefer talking to their car rather than using the touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. Directly in front of the driver sits a 12.3-inch display serving as a digital gauge cluster.
