For nearly 50 years and through seven generations, the Volkswagen Jetta has withstood the test of time as buyers shift their focus from sedans to crossovers. It’s VW’s best-selling nameplate in North America, where buyers have snatched up more than 3 million examples since its introduction in 1979. The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta competes with best-selling compact sedans such as the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla, not to mention the fun-to-drive Mazda3 and the fuel-efficient Hyundai Elantra.

What’s New for the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta
Following a refresh for the 2025 model year that brought updated styling, a revised dashboard, and a new standard 8-inch infotainment system, the 2026 model gets only minor packaging tweaks. The Jetta is offered in S, Sport, SE, and SEL trim levels (a sporty GLI edition is also available) for 2026. Newly standard across all trim levels are rear-seat pretensioners and wireless App-Connect to pair compatible smartphones with the car’s infotainment system. SE models get a standard sunroof, and the SEL gains a premium VW audio system with eight speakers.
Design
The VW Jetta is a handsome car with clean lines, standard LED lighting front and rear, and an available illuminated light bar embedded in the grille. Jetta Sport models feature blacked-out exterior elements. All 2026 Jetta models wear alloy wheels, starting with 16-inch two-tone units on the S model. Sport models get 17-inch two-tone machined wheels, and SE models get different 17-inch wheels or optional black 18-inch units. The top-spec SEL gets its unique 18-inch alloy wheels.
Powertrain
All 2026 Jetta models (except the GLI, which we cover separately) are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission available (except for the GLI), and power is routed to the front wheels. Jetta Sport models feature an XDS Cross Differential System, which is VW’s fancy name for the electronic limited-slip differential that improves handling and stability in corners. In base S trim, the 2026 VW Jetta achieves EPA-estimated fuel mileage figures of 29 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg combined. Sport, SE, and SEL models lose one mpg combined.

Interior
In base S form, buyers can choose from black or gray cloth seats. Jetta Sport models get embossed black cloth seat upholstery, and both the S and Sport models feature brushed silver trim. Jetta SE models get perforated CloudTex leatherette seating surfaces in either gray and black or blue and gray two-tone combinations. Jetta SEL models feature perforated Vienna leather seat surfaces in either gray and black or brown and black color combinations with contrast stitching. The 2026 Jetta is pretty roomy for the compact sedan class and offers 14.1 cubic feet of trunk space. The rear seats fold down in a 60/40 split to accommodate large objects.
Technology
An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard on all 2026 Jetta models, and it’s slightly canted toward the driver. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. While Jetta S, Sport, and SE models have a relatively small 8-inch digital instrument cluster, the SEL gets an upgraded 10.25-inch fully configurable Digital Cockpit Pro feature with four distinct views. The 2026 Jetta SEL offers a Driving Mode Selection enhancement with four modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and a Custom mode that the driver can customize.
