The 2026 Kia Niro straddles the line between hatchback and sport utility vehicle, but no matter how it's classified, the Niro is a compelling option for buyers looking for a stylish, affordable, and efficient new car. For 2026, Kia offers the Niro in two forms—the standard version boasts a fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain, while the Niro EV is fully electric.

What’s New for the 2026 Kia Niro
The Kia Niro carries forward into the 2026 model year without any major changes. Last year, a plug-in hybrid model was sold alongside the hybrid and electric variants, but it’s disappeared from the showroom floor for 2026. The Niro was last updated for 2023 with new styling, a modern and stylish interior, and more room inside than its compact exterior dimensions may suggest.
Design
Kia isn’t afraid of bold designs, and the Niro delivers with a smooth look from most angles. Its basic shape is highlighted by so-called "aeroblades" at the rear that can be ordered in a glossy black shade that contrasts with the Cityscape Green or Mineral Blue body panels on Niro SX Touring models. Even without the aeroblades, the Niro looks classy, with fun details such as the distinctive headlamps with straight-edge slashes and faux skid plates that add visual flair to its handsome shape.
Powertrain
The Kia Niro’s hybrid powertrain combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to send 139 horsepower to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) is not available. The Niro EV gets a single electric motor with 201 horsepower powering the front wheels. The EPA estimates that the Niro EV can drive up to 253 miles on a single charge, and the hybrid Niro can average up to 53 mpg in mixed driving.

Interior
The 2026 Kia Niro’s dashboard features an attractive sloping design that integrates its digital screen for a very clean look. Thanks, in part, to its long roof design, the Kia Niro feels comfortable and roomy enough inside for four adults. There are 22.8 cubic feet of storage space in the cargo area, with a smart two-tier design and an undertray for additional capacity, and up to 64.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.
Technology
Base Kia Niro LX models are fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels feature a 10.25-inch unit and a wireless phone charging pad. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trim levels. Kia’s latest UVO infotainment software is easy to use, but the single panel that switches between climate and infotainment controls is a bit fiddly. SX and SX Touring Niro models get an upgraded Harman Kardon audio system.
