I bought 2002 Outback Sport July 2001 (early production model) its been the most dependable car Ive owned in my 8 decades. I can still take my hands off the wheel at 80 mph and it will track straight and true. With auto trans 0-60 is a bit compromised but passing by dropping the auto to 3 is very brisk. Still not a speck of rust outside, inside, upside or down. I put aside money for a new luxury sports sedan but cant see any reason to switch rides -- love my Subie.Dec 20, 2022

The car had bodywork that look like a five-year-old did it. No clean title. Needed a head gasket job. The car has been in an accident on the right side Which was also not transparent in the Carfax. The rim is bent and the rear from the accident. The car was basically not sellableOct 07, 2021

I like the inclement weather handling of this car it is far superior turning in snow than a longer wheel base and the ride is very similar. It is comfortable for four passengers and the reduced hatch space still allows for lots of stuff.
Mileage is not way up there compared to similar sized cars, but its worth having the extra power. Keeping up with fuel economy simply requires changing out the coils, plugs, wires and fuel filter and solves most rough idle and diminished performance issues and these can be done yourself with no trouble.
The design and assembly of this car is well done with a place for everything in the engine compartment and adequate space that makes it easier to dig in and repair things - for instance, I can replace the plug wires without much trouble.
This is my fourth Subaru and so far my favorite.Jul 10, 2014

I love this car. Looks great drives great. It performs very well and I hope to keep for a long while. The all-wheel drive makes all the difference in its performance and even though its not turbo it still has a decent amount of power, 173hp to the wheel. bottom line is its fun.Feb 19, 2011

All Wheel Drive is impressive. The inline 4 is ok. Very fast through 40mph. Very crunchy in high rpms. Strong Brakes. Handles great for a base model car. Built solid. Minor problems with smaller parts. Nothing major. Sport Appearance. Wide aggressive stance. Fun in bad weather.Feb 01, 2011

Acceleration is mild due to lack of turbo.
Handles just the same as all Impreza family vehicles.
Build Quality is amazing, no major repairs, some minor recalls.
Exterior Appearance could use some work, but maintains family styling.
Gas mileage could be improved on, but with owning this vehicle, one doesn't think about fuel economy.Oct 31, 2010

I Love the style of the car. I love how people always say "how many pounds of boost you running?" But even without a turbo the car is very impressive. I think the cars are very well put together compared to some cars I have owned in the past. I owned two Subarus and I would definally buy another one.Feb 18, 2010

An awesome car, a non turbo basic model of the WRX.
Pretty fast and never gets stuck in the snow, its also a
5 speed which makes driving off road fun. this is also
the safest ive ever felt in a car.Dec 10, 2009

Quick, fun and great in the snow. The AWD is incredible. Looks cool with the little wing. Little upkeep cost. Handling is awesome with the AWD. Braking is not very impressive. Definitely a good buy. I recommend this to anyone that needs a cool car that tears up the snow. Oct 27, 2009

This is a great little car. It's lightweight, fuel efficient and handles incredibly well thanks to the all wheel drive. Living in Connecticut the ability to have a reliable way to get around in the snow is critical! Just realize that it's not invincible!Oct 18, 2009

Subies are just hot, there is nothing else to say. Its one of the best cars to own on the planet. You get inside and you enjoy the ride. Awd and the boxer motor what a great combination. Enjoy the subarusOct 12, 2009

For living in the middle of New England, also known as Subaru Country, this car really holds its own. The base model Impreza isn't known for it's road gripping performance, as it's known for being a solid, take on anything, go forever type of car. It still makes great use of Subaru's Symmetrical AWD system, getting it through even the worst weather New England has to offer. I've had the car almost 2 years and haven't had any mechanical issues. In fact, I haven't had any issues at all. It's a well-built car that I'm sure will last for many years.Apr 14, 2009

I've looked at these cars for a while and finally got one a couple months back. I couldn't have made a better car myself. Sure its not the turbo, insurance would've been crazy anyway, but I love my car. Nothing but positive things to say about it. Quality is excellent, handling is great, and perfect styling.Mar 01, 2009

A very solid, clean & good looking car. Good acceleration, very good braking and handles like a dream. The whole 4-wheel drive and all. Appearance wise exterior is pretty good and interior is fairly standard. Wish I could have a banging stereo. Ofroad driving for this vehicle is an absolute must. So much fun. Oct 07, 2008

This car is a solid performer, with great pick up and awesome handling. The Symetrical All-Wheel Drive ensures the car stays stuck to the road in almost any situation, unless you're on a loose surface. The build is solid, though the back seat could be roomier. Cost of ownership has been minimal, with only one major tune-up being required thus far. I've put over 60000 km on it in the first two plus years of ownership, usually with a highway range of over 600 km per 60 L tank of regular unleaded. Overall, it's a really fun car to drive!Sep 10, 2008

I love it not only because Its way better looknig than any of the imprzas since 02.
but nothing beats the assurity you get with AWD its so practical/ versatile. its compact and so easy to drive if you just want to cruise yet you know you've got the power and perfrmance on demand whenever you need it. The interior is comfortabel and ergonomic then theres the unmistakeable sound of the engine.
What I don't like is that everyone thinks its a WRX and wants to race you

Taking a turn in an impreza is an event you will never forget, I have taken steep S shaped turns at 100 KM/H and on the highway taken turns at 190 KM/H, steering performance is a dream.
The car is as stable as they come, I have reached the magic number of 200 Km/h and left the steering wheel and the car kept going in a straight line.
Acceleration is it's best feature it has to be said, the car is pretty heavy (1.3 tons) and the engine is a 1.6 liter 100 bhp boxer engine, not very much horse power but very tourqey, going up a hill is like going down one, you don't feel the difference, with A/C is like without ...
Sound isolation is quite good, it's no Merc. but it isolates the exterior sound to a great extent, also isolation from the road is nice, the suspension system works well to deal with all the bumps and ditches of the lovely Cairo roads.
The sound the car makes is one of my favorite things about it, a melody of power and engineering, not too loud but loud enough to stand out in the crowd.
Some people don't like it's looks, personally I think it is one of the most gorgeous cars out, very appealing to me, aggressive and yet streamline.
Fuel consumption is not that great though, because the car is so heavy and only 1.6 liter it consumes alot of fuel and I guess the fact that it is an automatic adds to that. It does about 34 KM to the gallon or 170 KM / 20 KM (Safi7a) or 21 MPG which ever you wanna know :)
When you drive this car aggressively for the fun of it then you really start understanding what a scooby is all about, the car responds to your every move instantly and always has enough torque when you need it ..
It's always a good sign when you miss your car when you don't drive it too often, sometimes you just feel like going for a drive, not going anywhere, just for the passion of it (Of course no traffic would help alot!)Aug 07, 2008

1.6 litre engine.. 95 bhp from stock
superb handling despite slow acceleration
its all about sub's AWD and independent suspensions
one has to be very gentle with the gearbox
reliable in general
good fun relatively to the small size engine
drinks quite a lot of petrol though
spare parts available everywhere whereas good mechanics are quite limited

Replaced a pick-up and needed some space for carrying equipment/beer/etc. Wanted a sports car, and this was a good and inexpensive compromise. Would get a WRX / STi version next time, and definitely better as a standard transmission.May 31, 2008

It's fun and versatile. There's plenty of interior space and features to please any one. Heated seats. Amazing sound system. The overall performance really kicks, you become one with the horses (approx 173 hp if you can). AWD in the winter is a dream. The sport suspension is an added bonus and handles well even during most demanding driving conditions ie. Montreal roads all year round.Jan 30, 2008

This is my first car, and I absolutely love it.
It comes out of the box with better performance than your general econobox. However, if you wish to make it peppier, the options for aftermarket parts are definitely there.
Perhaps it's main pro is that for a under 20k car it comes with AWD, which is a great heltp in winter time if you live in Chicago like me.
It's decently fast, and it can turn pretty well too. It's definitely above average if hyou're looking at a commuter car. All that and you can use 87 octane as well. So it's super cost-effective. Gas mileage is 22 MPG Street and 28 MPG Highway. While not great it is abvoe average. For the power you get, it's great.
Like any street-car it has plenty of low end grunt. It has enough to get you past thae car ahead of you on a lane merge.
For the tuner, it presents a challenging project, as power does not come easily to the 2.5RS like it does for the beefier brothers, the WRX and the WRX STi.Jan 15, 2008
