I owned a 1999 SLK and enjoyed every minute of the drive. Its perfect for the Portland traffic, has plenty of power to play with any car on the road. Minor issues with the retractable hard top but no problems with the drivetrain. Added a stage 11 performance chip and the inline 4 cylinder outperformed many 6-8 cylinder cars. Nov 25, 2023

The car is in great shape for the year that it is. There are some cosmetic things that needs to be handled but the car runs greatFeb 08, 2023

Great power, pulls real hard through all the gears. The handling is really impressive,it's spot on for cornering and breaking. A lot of people always complement the yellow with the white wheels I always get thumbs up ever I go May 06, 2015

It is not traditionally sport car fast but it is quick and responsive. The hardtop is really easy to use and is very quiet for a convertible. The ride is surprisingly quiet and smooth. Just an overall fun, pleasurable car.Feb 19, 2014

This car is amazing...class, performance, economy, safety, personal, all in ONE neat inexpensive little package...go figure! The best feature besides the above is ONE Button to push to lower or raise the convertible hardtop...how easy could it be....my TAN is so much better this year as I can easily work on 'it' almost every day here in the Houston area....!!Jul 17, 2013

This car drives well and shifts smoothly with firm and predictable brakes. The top operates flawlessly and the remote control for the top is a cool feature. The sound system with CD changer sounds good and there are quite a few storage areas within the interior. The trunk is bigger than most other convertibles out there. Nov 30, 2012

Great little road or commute car. The power generated by the supercharged 4 cly is awesome. The car handles like a dream at high speeds. The powered top never misses a beat and fits great when up and locked; very little wind noise. The car is not well mannered in snow and ice; although the traction control does help. Dec 03, 2011

I took a 3 week trip and covered 5000 miles this summer. The mileage best was 29.95 mpg. When I returned home I needed brakes but 110,000 is pretty good for the original brakes and it was only the front brakes.Nov 16, 2011

The Benz that goes topless. All the niceties of a high end coupe like perforated leather seats, heated seats, dual climate control, power everything with the bonus of being a top down summer roadster that turns into a beautiful hard top coupe in 20 seconds. Still looks brand new after 10 years and drives like it left the show room.Oct 24, 2011

Just bought a 2003 with 38k, awesome car, acceleration - whoa!, the power hard-top is so nice, very little road noise, handling is smooth, my wife and I both think this car is a blast to drive. I'd recommend it to anyone, you can't beat them for the price.Apr 27, 2010

I love the speed, the hard convertible top, and the
look of my lil car :-) She accelerates very fast and
shifts gears extremely smoothly. The only problem
I have is with the interior console area-the
leather/paint is chipping off. But overall, I have had
no problems at all with this car. It is extremely fun
to drive and every time I take it out I get
compliments and it definitely turns heads. I love
German engineering.Jan 06, 2010

Fun and easy to drive, cheap and easy to maintain. It has a easy to open top and has lots of space for luggage compared to other roadsters in it's class, even with the top down. I would and will buy another in the future.Oct 03, 2009

Performance is incredible for the price (used), build quality is beyond compare in my experience. 70,000 miles with not one problem. The most incredible thing is that with 349hp I get about 25mpg on the highway. I've had over 50 cars and this is by far the best of the bunch. I absolutely love it.Aug 22, 2009

I bought the SLK because I'd become addicted to performance but also missed the convertible aspect. It replaced a Nissan Skyline GTR so it was never going to have an easy task. I was surprised that, when I started to get used to the incredibly sophisticated auto-box, it was so bloody fast and competent. Despite having slightly less power than the 400BHP Skyline it is much better poised and the torque levels are awesome (a big trait of 'V' engines).
It also carries a wonderful level of class, despite its brutal power, which allows it to hold its own in a "posh" hotel's carpark but also scare other drivers at a track day. Oh, it also has a 4.5 star NCAP rating (for the safety conscious out there!).
As for mine, I finally had it modified to 380BHP but frankly the standard car is all you should really need (at 354BHP); mine only went to that power as I got a bit carried away at a tuning shop! :-)
I'll wrap it up with two stats on the standard car:
0-60 - 4.9/5.0 according to MB (most magazines have got 4.6 out of it)
155mph (limited)

This car is really great to enjoy summer in. The electrical convertible si really cool and since it's basically a foldable hardtop you won't need to worry about bad weather either.
Only basic comfort, though you wouldn't expect more. Loads practically nothing (since the roof folds into the trunk).
Still quite enjoyable and the 2,3 litre supercharged engine is suprisingly quick and sounds good.Apr 01, 2008

For the past 30+ years, starting in high school, I was a Brit car guy. I've had an MGA, Cortina, Lotus and a Spitfire. They were all fun cars, some even very comptetitive, but all were tempermental. I finally got tired of spending more time under the car, than in it, so I sold the Spitfire. to replace it and become my daily driver, I found a beautiful 99 SLK and re-discovered what a fun drive could be. The car is responsive, nimble, comfortable in any weather, and reliable! Being a hard top convertable, I drive it year round and enjoy it every day. It's big enough to cruise the super highways, small enough to be fun on the twisty side roads, and who doesn't love a convertable in the sun shine. Sep 04, 2007
