An outstanding car, but not without a few weak points (transmission, visibility, warranty, fuel economy ... see pros/cons). Just be sure to carefully verify, if you get the 3.0L V6 from 2005 to 2006 whether your transmission is from the factory, and if so, is it suspectible to service bulletin TSB 05-016/06.
On the upside:
It has good power, outstanding handling particularly for a FWD car of its size, tremendous cargo capacity and flexibility due to the hatchback, reasonably priced, aggressive and rugged good looks. It is just all around versatile, flexible, reliable, and fun to drive. It encourages you to misbehave when you drive it... and I like that.
On the downside:
If you have the 3.0L V6, and it is original from the factory from 2005 until early 2006 ... be warned. You have a $5,000 timebomb in your drivetrain. Google search for Mazda Service Bulletin "TSB 05-016/06". Basically there is a defect in the transmission they did not fix in mass manufacturing until early 2006. When it rears its ugly head, it will cause the car to slip out of 4th/5th/6th and in general not want to change between them at all. The defect is in the valve body. A valve body alone is $1,500. A remanufactured transmission is $2,500 with another $2,000 in labor to install it. It is truly horrible that Mazda admits there was a defect but chose to issue a service bulletin instead of a recall. The transmission only appears in the 3.0L V6 model, and only the one using the Aisin made 6-speed automatic. Next time Mazda ... make the transmission yourself instead of getting a junk company nobody has ever heard of to do it. Also, the warranty was only 6 years, 60,000 miles. There is a fair bit of road noise at high interstate speed. And you must check your blind spot *WELL* as the rear pillars basically extend your blind spot. I'd recommend aftermarket side mirror bubble mirrors. You'll struggle to do much better than 25mpg.Jan 13, 2015

I would buy this car again in a heartbeat. I love the way it looks. The hatchback is very useful for college junk transport. The suspension is sporty and great fun. There is plenty of power form the V6. The manual transmission is a great addition. It was a fun car.Nov 26, 2013

Nicely engineered. Quick when you want it to be, smooth ride, so-so fuel economy. The inside of the cabin area is large enough for me to sit comfortably in on the long hauls. It's my wife's car, She's the nice lady in the picture.Aug 26, 2013

I can honestly say there is nothing I dislike about this car. For someone with a family having a sports car is not always practicle. I wanted something sporty. The MAZDA6 delivered on everything I wanted; sporty, reliable, afforable, comfortable, good on gas. I couldn't ask for anything more. Mar 19, 2013

We bought this car used and have put nothing into it besides gas, oil and tires. It runs strong and is really a fun little car to drive. It has good pep despite only haveing 4 cylinders. We love it.Nov 21, 2012

Great car overall. Approaching 150,000km and still feels like new, smooth and comfortable. Not a single change or repair except for the battery.
Average consumption 8.2L/100km, very reasonable for a 2L engine in city/semi rural environment at good paces.Apr 03, 2010

Performance: Handles very well, good grip and steering
feel.
Accelerates with more of a kick than you'd expect from its
4 cylinder engine.
Handles great, its got a good steering feel and lots of grip.
Build Quality: Decent
Appearance: Great looking car for it's price.
Very Fun to drive.Feb 20, 2010

Performance: What you would expect acceleration wise from a 4 cylinder car that weighs 3275 lbs. Brakes are near flawless and the chassis feels like its connected to your brain with every response
Build quality: Could be better, but also could be much worse. its not gonna fall apart or anyhting, just some trim panels that could fit better and an occasional odd squeak or rattle from the suspension or interior. For the price you could do much worse.
Appearance: Definetly on the aggressive side, but not to the point of boy racer. Elegant but styleish but not overdone. The interior is laid out very well with verry user firendly controls.
Cost to own: Fuel economy is decent but nothing spectacular. Very reliable cars if you keep up on the maintenence. Costs are about the indistry average to maintain.
Fun Factor: Its a Mazda, fun is what they build they're cars forDec 13, 2009

Performance;
Acceleration - not bad, nice little v6
Breaking - not bad

It's a great sports sedan overall! Acceleration with the 4-cylinder model isn't brisk, but it is still more than adequate in traffic. Braking and handling are excellent. Although there are many great choices in this class, I still think the styling of the first-generation 6 holds its own against competitors. The build quality is solid overall, albeit with a few fit and finish concerns. Overall, it is a very fun-to-drive and economical sports sedan, and after two years of ownership, I'm still very happy with it!Oct 23, 2009

This car has good fuel economy for a not too expensive and sporty car. It also has five star crash safety ratings along with a traction control system that can be turned on and off by just the push of a button. The only thing I dislike about this car is the 120 mph speed governor programmed into the computer.Jul 21, 2009

This car gets amazing mileage, the acceleration, braking and handling are all really great. It hasn't needed any repairs, nor does it squeak or rattle. I love this car, it is so much fun to drive. I have recommended this car to my friend and he got a similar one.Jan 07, 2009

I love this car! Speed and acceleration are pretty good. The handling is astonishing. I can throw this thing into turns extremely fast and have complete confidence in the car to bring me out the other side. It grips the road really well. Gas mileage is really good, I can drive the car as hard as I can and it still gets good mileage. The car is a blast to drive!Jan 01, 2009

It is a great car and fun to drive. It has lots of space with the hatchback with NONE of the looks of a station wagon. Cost of ownership is cheap with the 4 cylinder engine, and it still has enough horses to really move. The transmission also lets you shift manually on this automatic car.Jul 22, 2008

This is a stunning car. We went out on a limb and bought one of the first Mazda6's available and have had little problems since. It's definitely better looking that many other cars in its class (Camry, Accord) and had some of the best handling in car this size. While the gas mileage is so-so (V-6), the engine note is spectacular. If you get an automatic, have the tranny fluid changed regularly or its quick to start slipping and missing gear changes. Other than that, its a joy to have!Jul 10, 2008

I have a Mazda 6 and I absolutely love it. I have the more pricer version which includes scotch guarded seats, V6 engine, and many many more other features. This car has amazing performance. The body style is sleek and gorgeous. When you wax it, it makes it look smooth as a bullet. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants good quality, performance, and a gorgeous apperance.Jul 01, 2008

The Mazda6 is an exceptional midsize sports saloon. It is fun to drive and has a comfortable non-abusive yet communicative ride. The handling is superb for a FWD car of this size. The hatchback adds a flair of uniqueness which is missing in many of today's midsize family cars. It also greatly improves cargo handling flexibility. And of course mine features my favorite option: the manual transmission! I would love for it to have a 6th gear like the automatic, but there is no way I would give it up for the slush box.Apr 16, 2008

This car is great, handles extremely well, in all types of climates. The acceleration is amazing. I love to go fast and get there quickly. Also, it makes turns very fast without losing much speed. The interior of the car is a little on the ugly side, you have a black dash but biege seats and carpets. So, overall the car is great!!!Apr 04, 2008

The new Mazda6 shape was a winner from the start. Very stylish ans sleak, it aimed to please. With standard features such as climate control, cruise control, 6 stack CD player and active matic transmission just to name a few, the Mazda was a winner inside and out.
The 4cyl, 2.3l engine meant getting 600km out of a single tank was not an issue. Averaging around 9.5-9.8l per 100km in built up areas made it very easy to manage financially as well.

I can't afford the sexy Alfa Romeo coupe that was reviewed on Top Gear recently but my Mazda 6 is the best car I've owned. It handles well, takes off like a shot when you need to but is a smooth ride pottering around town. It has enough leg room to accommodate my tall teenagers, a boot that fits a ton of baggage and I love the colour!Jan 22, 2008

This car had great acceleration and commendable handling, plus a terrific Bose enhanced sound system with indash 6 CD changer, automatic climate control, and all the luxurious gadgetry of the Audi A6 wagon it replaced in our garage, at half the price.Nov 30, 2007
