Land Rovers/Range Rovers have two fundamental flaws (after all these years and after exhausting the patience of multiple corporate overseers): 1. sporadic infestations by electrical gremlins, and 2. air suspensions that are not up to the task of propping up two tons of steel and aluminum. Range Rover Classics are, however, fantastic to drive and, if properly maintained, mechanically solid. The 1993-1994 RR County LWB 4.2 is the best of the first generation "Classic" models (but not the transitional 1995 with its Discovery innards). They possess an elegant design, bullet-proof engines and transmissions, and extraordinary abilities both on and off road. My 1994 has been utterly reliable. Advice: 1. Dump the air suspension and replace it with the tried-and-true Old Man Emu and Bilstein spring/shock 2" lift combo; 2. Change all your fluids every 5,000 miles with the original spec LR lubricants; 3. Biennially lubricate and grease axles and bearings (and check the swivel housings and steering rack for leaks); 4. Steam-clean and Waxoyl the chassis and all box sections every three years; and 5. Just don't bother to repair the following items that you really don't need and which WILL fail repeatedly: fan speeds 1 and 2 on the dash heater control panel (but not speed 3, for some reason, which is really all you need); heated front seats; rear side window lifters; heating elements in the side mirrors and rear windshield; rear window wash/wipe mechanism; and cruise control. If you can Keep Calm and Carry On without these items, and just enjoy the driving experience with the rock solid engine, transmission and other drive line components (and the numerous surviving, robust luxury amenities, including the great sound system and the sweetest smelling, most comfortable Connolly leather seats this side of a Rolls-Royce), then by all means buy a RR Classic yourself. They really will take you anywhere you want to go, on road or off, legal or wildly illegal (we all have stories), and you'll periodically experience the Schadenfreude that comes from seeing almost every other vehicle bogged down or flailing about in ice, snow, mud and all manner of muck, while you shift into low range and diffidently go about your business somewhere down the road. Of course, you could always tarry a while and tow one or two of them out of the quagmire, but we don't always have the time or inclination, do we? By the way, if you don't want any fuss and don't mind driving a vehicle with all the character (and driving dynamics) of a brick, purchase a Landcruiser or G-Wagen. Blah. Baaaaaa.Sep 02, 2014

needs more power! and better mpg. but to me, its the best car in the world... it is
my first car!!! the handling is horrabal because it never came with sway bars. but
what that means, is that it has a REALLY smooth ride. i still own it but its in
california and im in south america.May 23, 2013

The Range Rover had already been around for 15 years or so when they launched the diesel version, soon followed by a more powerful VM turbo diesel. This car was very well built, stable on the road (except when wet), reliable & always ready to go off-road. The Range does everything that you require it to in comfort. Great suspension that has been immensely improved since the 90s, good looks and a good and quite fuel efficient engine.
I am very impatient to see the new Defender though... (Land Rover DC100 in its expedition livery) Aug 17, 2012

The 87/88 Range Rover Classic are the simplest to maintain. Its a solid truck that has real off-road abilities unmodified. Parts are readily available. The truck is as comfortable as anything that was designed in the late 60's.Mar 20, 2012

Great fun for off roading, I bought her on the cheap as a project to work on evenings. The soft spring rates and lack of anti-roll bars make it interesting to go round roundabouts to say the least. The three speed automatic is nigh indestructible but doesn't do much for the fuel economy. You can't get a better car to go shopping in! (provided the shop is not reachable by any decent road). Braking on slippery surfaces is a joke thanks to the lack of ABS and the weight of the car :-)Jan 12, 2012

American Mechanics don't seem to understand the English car. Once you know it, it is as dependable as any American Car and almost as much as a Japanese car. Touring at its best (Except for the 528i BMW). Land Rovers are made to go the distance between service calls. They do just great, specially since they gave up Lucas electrics.Jan 03, 2012

Found this little jewel sitting on the back lot of a big internet car/dealership,seems that the internet leader, had paid way too much for the car.The owner was miffed at him and ask him why he tied up so much of his hard earned money in this hunk of junk.It was great towing Boats. You hardly knew you had a boat behind you.Dec 09, 2011

Typical Land Rover, English engineering but still the BEST 4X4XFAR The Family
has great fun in it we go places that not a lot of others have been and see some
magnificent sites. We also get to camp with great people and yarn around the
fire with a cold oneOct 22, 2011

I love the look of these old 2 door Range Rovers. Usually down at the stern and
they make a great noise with that lovely old V8.
Mine was rotten the previous owner had used Paper Mache to make it look good.
But hey I kept the Power Steering (for about 10 years it was on my 90) and the
extra optional air conditioning system.

Just got the out most of it in 4x4 driving but it was an oldie with twin carburaters, too much cost in petrol.handling was perfect ,it really was fun to drive. My main problem was a gas leak in the tank caused by getting the phamton 21 in and out of the sea ,salt water does it all.Oct 02, 2009

It's a classic.. it's a Rover.. It has serious quirks. Don't buy one unless you love 'em. So much fun to drive, get's lots of looks. Will usually get you home no matter what. Easy to work on. Are you serious that this doesn;t have enough words

This was another just a great all round car, was brilliant for loading up and going away for the weekend, very comfortable, was a little short on rear leg space but still comfy, Boot was huge and great split tailgate makes a great kitchen surface for bbq's and camping. brilliant off road. was juicy on the petrolbut you dont buy these type of cars if you want to be economical.May 12, 2009

Accelerates slowly but brakes well even on ice. Its handling is good at high speeds it doesn't have the best handling. As it is 14 years old it has had many repairs, after all my dad has driven it into a river and it went through my brothers high school years, 2 of his college years and my high school.Jan 23, 2009

No sway bars no ABS no sunroof no leather, closest I could get to a Defender in a Range Rover. No rust. Has only broken down once in 2 months of ownership. Very comfortable, very slow, very bad fuel economy. Its a Rover. With some RTE love, some 24 spline bits and a LT230 I might have a good start.Sep 01, 2008

This rig was born to be a trail monster, cutting the fender wells was relatively easy to fit larger tires.
Keep an eye on the engine temp though because they are known for overheating problems.
Also don't let your buddies take it wheeling without you or you will be fixing it for a long time to come.
The headliner is a problem because once it starts to sag and you want to replace it trying to find fabric that size is a nightmare.Aug 20, 2008

Tough car, tough looks, goes most places I point it.
Has Cruiser diffs stuffed with ratios, ARB's and cromo
gear. Runs on 35's . Has the standard 3.9 V8 and 4
spd auto. Full luxo leather interior. Look for a story on
it in 4WD Action magazine, issue 124 due out in
September.Jul 31, 2008

its red, v8 and very fast. sounds lush, has needed door
sills repairing, but otherwise it is very sturdy and
extremely solid and has given me no other concerns. It
is a petrol guzzler tho! and costs alot to keep going.
however, it makes up for it by being so fun.Jul 19, 2008

just got it, handles like a champ in the mud. Will climb a tree if I so desire. Torque out of the woodwork. Shes running fairly rich but I have to replace the o2 sensors and that will take care of that and improve the gas mileage. I just hauled 10000 lbs from va to nc and got city mileage. other than a mildly slow takeoff there was hardly any difference in driving. Acceleration is nice but pricey. Braking is solid. and it handles like a 4x4 should. The only repairs are from the last owners. Maintenance is pricey because the parts are pricey and half of the parts are not available at your standard aftermarket dealer. This vehicle is a blast to drive.Jul 14, 2008

Wonderfully comfortable interior, drivers seat is like an armchair.
Long distance driving, towing or otherwise is effortless, autobox and V8 combo make her brilliant around town and in traffic too. Gas system makes it all affordable.
Despite being a big, heavy car it's still pretty rapid, and very chuckable.
Classic styling, looks pretty decent covered in mud, but polishes up to an absolutely lovely finish, still looks fresh, new and original despite being fifteen years old, and the original shape closer to 40.Apr 28, 2008
