The 1997 is the year to own, not the 1998. Too many changes made after '97 that made repairs difficult. Any and all repairs we've made have "do-able". I personally have had the dash apart several times and it was easy to replace bulbs and parts. Rides quiet and has plenty of room for long trips with the kids. So many options on this to list!May 09, 2015

I don't think there is a better vehicle than the Ford Expedition. Going on a trip? Pack whatever you want! Take that extra suitcase, and bring that extra friend! Moving? We put all of our clothes for 2 adults and a teenager and 4 large TV's, 3 large plants, and a bunch of paintings in this vehicle when we moved. Do you get carsick? You won't in an Expedition, because of the visibility and the height you are sitting up off of the road. If you aren't a big fan of traveling and road trips make you crabby, try your next trip in an Expedition. You'll quickly become a fan. You just can't beat this vehicle.Apr 29, 2015

Fun to drive! Lots of power. Take care of it, and it won't let you down! Hard on gas (as a daily driver), but worth it! Perfect for snowy conditions! This one is highly recommended, ...if you can get one! Go for it!!!Jun 10, 2014

Low fuel economy. It has been very reliable and practical. It is tough with good off-road traction. powerful AC and heater for any weather. Very roomy and comfortable for long trips. Good for short daily commutes, hauling boxes and people, and going on road trips.Jan 06, 2014

I love the space, the handle, and comfort. Great vehicle for the price. Can comfortably carry a family and cargo. Has a pull out cargo space installed in the trunk as well. Interior is very easy to clean as well.Sep 27, 2013

The expedition is a great vehicle. It is a great handler, hauler, and driver. It handles any weather conditions, can always be relied on to start, and is well recognized. Easily hauls a family or car of friends, or you can put down the second row, take out the third row, and you have a 6'6" truck bed for any needs. Very versatile, functional vehicle. Only down side to me is gas mileage.
Note: This truck took its last trip back in September. Heading south on HWY 41 in Parke County Indiana, it hydroplaned through a curve and rolled twice. Accident was due to adverse weather conditions and thus does not change my opinion on the quality of this vehicle.May 08, 2013

We love this vehicle, and feel totally spoiled by its comfort, particularly on long trips. Reaches highway speed effortlessly and quietly. We have never needed a major repair, and it is at 166K; mechanic says the Triton engine is one of the best models ever made and it should go much, much farther without needing anything but routine maintenance. By driving it smoothly I routinely get 14.5 mpg in the city, 14.5 to 15 highway, even when driving 70-75 mpg. Superior in so many ways we are afraid to ever sell it, for fear we won't find another vehicle built so well! Absolutely recommend this vehicle for dependability, power and comfort.Oct 03, 2012

Overall, my truck is a great family vehicle. It can seat 7 adults but I would suggest the 3rd row stadium seating be reserved for children as it's not roomy in the leg department. The 2nd row captain seats are very comfortable indeed. The DVD player keeps the kids happy for awhile. :-) The driver and passenger seating are very comfortable as well. As big as my truck is, it's not awkward and I've always felt comfortable driving it. My truck is a V8 Triton so it accelerates well and handles well. Braking depends on the brake & tire quality. The better the quality, the better the braking and handling. Cheap brakes squeak and cheap tires make the truck feel as though it's rolling slightly to the sides. I believe maintenance and repair costs are fair for my truck. Overall, I would recommend this truck for any family needing reliable transportation but can't afford $10,000+ for a new car. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Outstanding reliabilty and performance. With today's higher gas prices it has become less economical to drive. It can handle all the needs of a family. Hauls the family, appliances, boats and pets effortlessly. Great vehicle for the money.Feb 04, 2011

Lets start withe the backbone of every real truck the chassis. Sturdy and not very flexible it lends itself to towing, hauling, and other heavy work. Compared to my moms s class its a cow. compared to the old empty flat bed farm truck its a dream. the brakes are fantastic (maybe the drilled and slotted had something to do with that?) its about 50ish horsepower short of being a street hero although it will put the average Joe back in the seat. interior is pretty good and everything. ONE MAJOR GRIPE: the 5.4 gas motor is an absolute disaster. if you buy a truck like this make sure it already had the spark plug issue handled like mine did. overall though wouldn't trade mine for anything less than a diesel truck. My 1997 Ford Expedition was bought primarily as a family outing 'hauler' and an escape from being stuck in snow-drifts after living in Chicago for a few years with a '93 Honda Civic. Needless to say, I was tired of digging the little Honda out of the snow after a few inches of overnight dusting.
The Expeditions power comes from its 4.6L Triton Engine that definitely has enough power to tow trailers and boats significantly larger than the Expedition itself.
The interior comfort makes for a stress free ride while on long-haul adventures. I've driven my Expedition from Chicago to Miami and back a few times, with no problems.
The only downside I see to the '97 Expedition is the amount of gas it takes to keep her going. The 25 gallon tank will show a low level light with 2 gallons remaining - with which you had only traveled approximately 290 to 310 highway miles. This averages out to about 13 mpg Freeway and is not very helpful on the pocketbook - especially when the gas prices had hit all-time highs only a year ago.Aug 08, 2009

This Truck Is Very Roomy. I do not like that it takes a long time to pick up because its heavy. It is very fun when you have a lot op people on the SUV. It is very efficient on the gas although its a V8. I do regular tune-up so it helps.May 05, 2009

Great off road handling. Superior traction in all conditions. Very few repairs needed since purchased. Great MPG for its year and size. Excellent horsepower because of size of engine (5.4L). Very Fun to drive on or off roads. Terrific traction in the snow. Powerful enough to become a weekend plow truck. Destroys the completion for its year in all suv's. Also it is as heavy duty as a tank, almost indestructible. Only Down part of this truck is it is a gas Guzzler. I would certainly recommend this SUV to everyone who likes to have fun or has a big family (Seats 8 with 3rd row seat)Dec 14, 2008

The ford expedition is a fun SUV to drive. It is so high off the ground that I can see the roof of an explorer. Performance wise it is very good. I haven't had to do much work on it. It is incredibly easy to do oil changes on. My expedition has the eddie bauer trim package ( leather seats , sunroof and 6cd changer in the armrest.) MPG really stink , it only gets about 13, but it is very safe and makes driving in winter a breeze. The only real issue I have had with the expedition is the rough shift . When the engine RPMs are high the gear shifts feel vaguely like being kicked by a mule; but that problem can be avoided by relatively slow acceleration. Oct 06, 2008

This is such a wonderful SUV. Gas is not as bad as most people may think. It gets 14 in the city and about 20 on the hwy. Very spacious for trips, and very safe. Driving is fun, wonderful, and very realiable. A really smart buy. I am really glad we bought it.Sep 04, 2008
