While I like the styling, handling, and all the creature comforts of this vehicle they did have some problems with instrument clusters (and I have). I converted this unit to four wheel disk breaking for towing. Still own this rig and have no intention of selling.Nov 11, 2014

Would be a great car for hunting, hauling, or driving around town. Very reliable and looks great. Seats are comfortable and durable. Gas mileage is not great, but car accelerates and handles very well. Very fun to drive. Overall a great car.Oct 13, 2014

Great American-made Vehicle!! Never had a problem traveling across states as it has great acceleration and maintains its speed very well. The interior size is awesome with back seats and enough room for cargo behind the back seat. With the Suspension Lift, it hugs the road nicely and handles very well.Jul 10, 2014

The only truck I would buy, 350 v8, big, power, great looks, great options and wont get stuck anywhere. Fast for its size and great handling in snow, or rain. The car is fun to drive in any condition. I recommend. Apr 13, 2014

If you take care of this 1997 vehicle properly, you won't have to replace much at all and easily do 300,000 miles with it. For example, I've had to replace the serpentine belt and re adjust the roaders because of my own lack of driving experience in the beginning. And which wasn't my fault to replace are the rear shocks. Bottom line though, this is a great vehicle, I can't express it enough. Jun 25, 2013

Its handling and braking abilities are good considering the size of the vehicle. It does great offroad and is comfortable and roomy. The gas mileage is the only down side to owning this vehicle seeing as its a V8 half ton it uses a lot of fuel other than that maintenance and repairs are economical and usually can be done yourself if you have any knowledge of Chevy small block 350's.May 12, 2013

216,000 miles and she's still going strong. 4x4 and clean as a whistle.
Great truck! Should last at least another 216k. Can tow a house and get
you through snow anything with 4 wheel drive. Nothing can beat a V8.Feb 27, 2013

I think I like the Tahoe for its versatility. From hauling things, to pulling other cars out of being stuck to just traveling it is one of the most comfortable vehicles I have ever owned.
The ONLY downside to is that I have seen is the MPG but I drive less than 7k per year so I fuel up very little.Feb 08, 2013

I use this vehicle for just about everything, from hauling vehicles to hauling anything in between. 4 wheel drive is not a bad thing either. With good tires and a steady ride can got anywhere I want!!! Fun ride to drive.Jul 21, 2012

My favorite part of the Tahoe was the Exhaust, The Power was exceptional. It did amazing in the snow and ice. The most fun car I've owned yet. If i could do it again i never would have sold it. Nov 03, 2011

This SUV should have been fitted with the 5.3 or 4.8 liter which came out in 1999 during that year which would have given it great pickup from a dead stop but GM decided to scrap this vehicle after that year model which I still feel is a great mistake on their part. The SUV is easy to park and will tow anything that I need with comfort and no disrespect to the 5.7 liter because it is a great engine but it just doesn't have the instant response of the newer motors. My future plans is to lay down a 5.7 liter from a corvette in to this one and I might just start enjoying the commute to work more than ever.Aug 04, 2011

Real solid truck. Runs like a beaut and rides like butter. The Body is in tip top
shape. Only downer of having a truck is he loves sucking down gasoline. Does
one hell of a brake stand. Running strong on 220,000.May 09, 2011

I am the original owner of this 1999 Tahoe. This vehicle has been garage kept and is very clean inside and out. I have maintenance/repair records. The following work was done in December: new spark plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap, replaced fuel injectors, replaced all gaskets, including lower intake gasket. Replaced alternator and changed oil & filter last week. Interstate battery and tires are 1 year old. Vehicle has cold AC. Registration and inspection are up to date. 175,000 miles. Runs and drives great,no machanical problems. Mileage is 14 city and 18 highway.

8 Cylinder 5.7 Vortec Engine
Power Windows, Locks and Outside Mirrors

Great Truck... impresive on sand ans snow... everything fits inside of it, including bunk beds and tables... strong, and powerful it even survived a heas on colission with a concrete wall and was able to drive it back to the garage.
Has one of the worst mileages ever, poor handling, and the steering isn't exactly acurate and doesn't give you good feedback... could have more power for the displacement it comesJun 01, 2010

Even though rough on gas mileage a 99 with only 70,000 miles pickep up for $5700 books over $7100 had to put some regular maint in it but nothing major great family vehicle. It rocks and we love it. We can tow anything and have plenty of room for our daughter and all our stuff. Really sharp truck has had lots of exterior work done to it. Mar 03, 2010

Dislike putting gas in it. I love the appearance and the build quality. The Performance is also EXCELLENT. One of the FUNNEST vehicles I have ever drove!!! It has over 195,000 miles on it and it still runs and drives awesome!Jul 31, 2009

strong acceleration from 350-ci V8 with plenty of towing power. 12 years old, but looks and feels brand new. Classic clean, angular Chevy truck styling. average 15 MPG, better than people I know with 6 cylinder TrailBlazers. Handles like a typical SUV, but fun to drive in a straight line or in the mud and snow.Jul 02, 2009

Looks tough, because it is. I mean come on, it is a chevy.
You can go just about anywhere and pull just about
anything. Plus it sounds good with the Flowmaster Tru Duals
coming off the solid 350 engine block. Jun 23, 2009

I loved everything about my 97 Tahoe, except it did not have rear AC. It was very hot in the rear, but I sat up front, so I loved it. I did a little work on the air intake and boosted my MPG to 23 on the hiway and 18 in town.May 19, 2009

It has a K&N air intake system and sounds awsome when it floor it. It seems responsive for how old it is and there is no ratteling inside. The build of it seems strong and fitted comfortablely. Also has the nice wind deflectors on the windows. Its comfortable to ride in and fun to drive.Mar 13, 2009

Swiss Army Knife of vehicles. I treat mine more as a short-box pickup with a non-removable canopy. Underneath the 'fancy' station-wagon utility lies a real half-ton truck.
Personally, this vehicle fits nicely with my mechanical skill set. There is not one part on this truck I wouldn't consider re&re'ing myself. (Unlike my previous early 90's Pontiac GTPs, which needed lots of special 'J' tools to perform ordinarily simple things like changing the front shock absorbers)
As it is actually a truck, and given basic service, I believe it should last almost forever in an urban setting. It's great in parking lots as it has a very tight turning radius for a 4x4.
Fuel costs are not much worse than the smaller, 3.4 V6, Pontiac GTP. (Mind you... Seeing as it's a Sport Futility Vehicle it promotes a more sedate driving style than the, very much more sporty, GTP)Nov 20, 2008

Performance: Acceleration is very touchy once work has been applied to the motor. I would compare to the acceleration of a Wrangler...a lot of torque and balls. Especially for the size truck I have.
Brakes: Very good for such a big SUV. Upgraded the front rotors and brake pads to slotted and drilled rotors and Semi-compound brake pads.
Handling, well it's an SUV so you can do over 40 on very very tight turns but it can handle 40 on most turns. It keeps it's ground.
Build Quality- Chevrolet, it speaks for it's self. There built to last and the motor is going strong. No rust on any body panels, the frame is a little brown and some rust but some good sanding will fix it. No squeaks or rattles.
Appearance: Big, Black, Gorgeous, the Soccer Mom SUV compacted into the ultimate SUV for fun and show. Exterior and Interior is perfect. Usually after 60,000 miles the captain's chairs wear out but easy fix and very comfortable. Exterior has some dents from rocks and the debris on the good ole' Northeastern roads of the U.S.
Cost of Ownership- The price of my truck when I bought it at 78,000 miles was a STEAL. I would almost anything for this particualr model becuase it was produced for four years and they will probably never be produced again. Gas mileage ranges from 14-22 with work to the motor and a little help from a superchip. Maintenance...drive well and take care of it and you wont have any problems.
Fun Factor- The best car I have ever driven.

Brownish, 4 door, 4 wheel drive, Chevy Tahoe. Camo seat covers for the front seats. Roomy back seat with big trunk area. Seats around 5 with seatbelts. You could fit 5 behind the back seat east. Brand new brakes. Great thick tires. Good radio. Pretty fast for a bigger truck. Around 176,000 miles on it. I love driving it. She's a beast!!Aug 05, 2008

great work truck. It drives like a sherman tank but is also indestructable and unbelievably reliable. It is not very quick having only around 250hp but I have towed boats and heavy machinery, moved furniture, loaded it with scrap metal, and used it for camping and ski vacations without any problems.
It is very comfortable despite having few luxury options. It is just a good, basic truck.
I would get the 4wd version if you do winter driving. The 2wd version slides easily on snow, ice, etc... making it no fun to drive in the winter Jul 19, 2008

A very strong vehicle with a 350 V8. It hides a lot of horsepower that is able to be made by it if the right mods are performed. Overall great interior design and layout. Not too big and definitely not too small. The four wheel drive model is a must (as long as you own a 1996 or newer to have the advantage of 50 extra horses). Exterior is well-designed and will stay fresh amongst eyes for years to come.Jan 17, 2008

I've used mine as a truck. It is a truck. It may not be as loaded with electronic junk as the new ones but then, everything still functions after 145,000 miles and 9 years.
It does very well as the family wagon and has made many trips across the continent without a problem.Jan 05, 2008
