2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid Reviews, Pricing & Specs

There are more than enough nips and tucks to set the new 2026 Kia Sportage apart from its predecessor. The SUV's front face receives the majority of the styling updates for the new model year, with sharp, angular headlights and a blocky new grille that blends into a fascia that looks modern and stylish. The Sportage has dramatic curves in profile that culminate in wide and aggressive haunches over the rear wheels. The rear of the Sportage is defined by upward-slanted lines and shapes framing the LED taillights. Kia calls its design philosophy “Opposites United,” and while it is a busy design, the overall result is a sharp-looking crossover that doesn’t look like anything else in its class.

The Sportage Hybrid X-Line package adds some off-road-inspired visual flair, plus added standard features like heated front seats and a power driver’s seat, but no actual off-road upgrades. The X-Pro Prestige trim level with its chunky B.F. Goodrich off-road tires isn’t offered with the hybrid powertrain.

The Kia Sportage Hybrid’s interior is similarly stylish. The dash is dominated by Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit design that features a curved 12.3-inch touchscreen display that runs the brand’s latest infotainment technology. All of the bits and pieces interior occupants come into regular contact with are fashioned from high-quality plastics, and while there are several different textures and colors, the overall effect is harmonious. Upper trim levels like the top-spec SX-Prestige and X-Pro Prestige look and feel like they could compete with entry-level SUVs from premium brands like Audi and Lexus.

The Sportage Hybrid X-Line (which is new for the 2026 model year) and SX-Prestige get unique interior finishes to set them apart from lower trim levels. Both the Saturn Black and Terracotta Brown colors in the X-Line get textured seating surfaces with a tread-like pattern while the SX-Prestige gets Saturn Black, Carmine Red or the Misty Gray hue of our test car along with suede-like highlights on the seats that add a premium touch to the cabin. We weren’t able to physically sit in any other Sportage Hybrid trim levels, which start at LX then move to S, EX and X-Line before culminating with the top SX-Prestige. The base LX is only offered in four colors (two grays, white and black) and gets black cloth seats. The S gets a few more exterior shades but still has black cloth; the EX trim benefits from perforated SynTex synthetic leather in either black or black and gray.

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a 47.7-kilowatt electric motor. Combined output is 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, which is up by five ponies over the previous model year, and that power is sent to the front or optionally all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The Sportage Hybrid is rated to tow 2,000 pounds.

Around town, the Sportage Hybrid’s well of low-end torque (likely courtesy of its electric motor) helps the crossover scoot around town with authority. Power does drop off as the speeds increase, and the transmission doesn’t always respond to extra throttle with a downshift as quickly as it should. That means passing power on the highway can be a bit of a letdown.

We have yet to drive the 2026 Kia Sportage Turbo Plug-In Hybrid, but that model’s bigger 72-kilowatt electric motor and total combined horsepower of 268 ponies likely means it’ll be a bit quicker than the regular Sportage Hybrid. Power for the non-hybrid Sportage comes from a 2.5-liter four cylinder making 187 hp 178 lb-ft of torque, and mated to an eight-speed automatic.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid’s suspension is tuned for comfort, and we think that’s appropriate for the Sportage’s mission as an efficient people mover. Big bumps never make their way through the soft suspension and into the backs of the Sportage Hybrid’s occupants. Road noise in our SX-Prestige test car was also quite low, making for a surprisingly serene cockpit even at highway speeds.

Sportage Hybrid models with AWD have 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which is sufficient to clear the kind of rocks and ruts that drivers are likely to find on their way to the perfect campsite. Front-wheel drive (FWD) versions sit about an inch closer to the ground. The AWD drivetrain also comes with a Terrain Mode button that is new for 2026 and that cycles between off-road settings that include Snow, Mud and Sand. All Sportage Hybrids have Eco, Sport and a customizable MyDrive feature as well.

Kia officially classifies the 2026 Sportage Hybrid (along with the rest of the Sportage line) as a subcompact crossover SUV and claims it’s the roomiest vehicle in its class. The reality is murkier. The Sportage’s wheelbase is four inches longer than the Honda HR-V that is clearly a subcompact crossover. In fact, the Sportage’s wheelbase is actually more than two inches longer than the Honda CR-V, which is clearly a compact SUV. Its overall length front to rear is within two tenths of an inch of the CR-V, too. So we’re comfortable in comparing the Sportage Hybrid to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4—two of the best-selling crossover SUVs in America.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid has plenty of room inside for four adults, and the second row can handle three across if the occupants don’t mind touching. The front seats in our SX-Prestige test car were quite comfortable, and legroom in both rows is reasonable. There are plenty of little cubbies for storage up front, including obvious spots to store cell phones while driving and cupholders for all occupants.

Storage capacity maxes out at 73.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down and the two-level cargo floor moved into its lowest position. It’s also possible to move the cargo floor up a small step to provide a flat load floor. With the rear seats in place, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid offers 39.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Kia says those are class-leading figures, but that applies to the subcompact crossover SUV segment. To put the numbers into perspective, the Honda HR-V has up to 24.4 cubic feet with the seats up and 55.1 cubic feet with them folded flat. The Honda CR-V offers numbers of 39.3 cubic feet and 76.5 cubic feet, respectively.

For buyers looking to do some comparison shopping right in Kia’s own showroom, the truly subcompact (and significantly cheaper) Seltos has up to 62.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The larger-but-still-compact Kia Sorento offers a small third row of seats that cut into its max cargo-carrying capabilities, leaving 75.5 cubic feet of room. The midsize Kia Telluride offers up to 87 cubic feet of space but is, as you’d expect, quite a bit more expensive and has much larger exterior dimensions.

Kia continues to use an overcomplicated set of touch-sensitive buttons to control common functions that a driver will need to interact with regularly. There’s a thin set of buttons and dials below the infotainment system on the center console that is used for multiple functions, including climate control, and it’s necessary to hit one particular (and small) button to change between those functions. It’s unnecessarily confusing to use, particularly for a driver who has to pay full attention to an unfamiliar road.

The 2026 Kia Sportage comes standard with a bright and colorful 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment package that was optional on previous Sportages. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported. The Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige trim level includes built-in navigation and also adds a 10-inch head-up display that helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road without needing to divert their attention to the dashboard.

All Sportage Hybrid models come with Kia Connect, a subscription-based technology package (free for the first three years) that adds a 4G wireless hotspot, the Kia Access App that allows an Apple or Android smartwatch to control entry and climate remotely, and a cloud-based mapping system that helps avoid congested areas. Additional features can be added to Kia Connect, including a new one for 2026 that lets drivers customize their infotainment systems with effects inspired by their favorite NBA team.

A six-speaker audio system is standard equipment, and the Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige bumps that to a Harman Kardon surround sound system with 400 watts and 8 speakers. Since we had an SX-Prestige model to test, we can’t compare the systems. We can say, though, that the upgraded audio package was excellent.

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid comes standard with quite a bit of driver-assist features, but some of the most advanced features aren’t available in the base LX model. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane following assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and driver attention monitoring are included on all trims. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and safe-exit warning come on LX-trim models and above.

Buyers have to step up to the top SX-Prestive trim level to get Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, a Blind-Spot View Monitor camera system, a more advanced forward collision warning system that includes Evasive Steering Assist, parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system and Highway Driving Assist 2. That last bit of technology is a semi-automated driving package designed to work on highways and includes automatic lane changing under the right conditions.

The 2026 Sportage Hybrid hasn’t yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the previous version, regardless of powertrain, earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS and five stars from NHTSA.

In base LX trim, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid starts at $31,735 (all prices include a mandatory but reasonable $1,445 destination fee) and is only offered with front-wheel drive. All other 2026 Sportage Hybrid trim levels get AWD as standard equipment. The new-for-2026 S trim starts at $34,035 and adds some desirable safety equipment. For an extra thousand dollars, the Sportage Hybrid EX gets Perforated SynTex seating materials, an optional panoramic sunroof, optional LED interior lighting, extra USB-C chargers for rear-seat passengers, roof rails, a power liftgate and more.

The $36,935 Sportage Hybrid X-Line gets very nice SynTex seating surfaces with cool patterns and a lovely optional Terracotta color scheme. A panoramic sunroof is standard, as is LED interior lighting. Most of the X-Line’s updates are external, including unique wheels and blacked-out accents. For $41,835, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige comes with everything that’s optional on lower trim levels and gets the nicest interior seating surfaces and the full suite of Kia’s driver assist features. While it’s a big jump from an EX or X-Line, the Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige feels like a premium compact crossover SUV.

Fuel economy for the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is a bit of a mixed bag, but pretty good overall. In base LX FWD guise, it gets EPA estimates of 41 miles per gallon in the city, 44 mpg on the highway and 42 mpg combined. A similarly equipped Honda CR-V gets 43 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined.

The figures drop dramatically for AWD models, to 35 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. That’s worse than an AWD Honda CR-V Hybrid (37 mpg combined) or Toyota RAV-4 Hybrid (39 mpg combined). The Sportage’s numbers are pretty close to the Honda and Toyota benchmarks, and the actual difference in fuel cost will be minimal, but we’d still prefer to see the AWD Sportage Hybrid score closer to the FWD model’s numbers.
