Nearly every automaker in the world has an electric vehicle (EV) strategy in place, and nearly all of them are—to put it kindly—ambitious. Volkswagen, for example, hopes that 80 percent of its European sales will consist of EVs, and that larger markets like the US and China will see a 50 percent EV sales penetration. By 2030. So far, there have been plenty of global announcements about the Volkswagen “ID” series of EVs, but only the ID.4 midsize crossover is sold stateside. The good news is that while the ID.Buzz remains a perennial tease, a new V-Dub flagship arrives for the global market: the ID.7.
What’s New for the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7
The Volkswagen ID.7 is an all-new battery-electric vehicle. As with every ID vehicle before and likely for some time after, the ID.7 sedan rides on Volkswagen’s dedicated EV architecture known as the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). Specifications for the US-market ID.7 are sparse but should be relatively similar to the European ID.7 lineup, which will be initially offered in two trims, the standard Pro and extended-range Pro S.
Design
The all-new ID.7’s exterior is a mashup of design elements. Its profile exhibits a low and short hood followed by a steeply raked windshield. The long roofline then tapers off to create a fastback look that is not unlike the Tesla Model Y. Also, the gloss black window trim frame the large windows in such a way as to give the appearance of a single glass pane. Add a high belt line, and the ID.7 has a commanding presence. All in all, the ID.7 doesn’t have many bad angles, and thanks to its purposeful aerodynamic design, the vehicle boasts a sleek 0.23 coefficient of drag.
Powertrain
The ID.7 is the sixth Volkswagen model to ride on the MEB platform but will be the first to showcase a newly developed drivetrain. At launch, the ID.7 Pro will feature the 77.0-kWh (82.0-kWh gross) battery pack found in the ID.4 but use a powerful new electric motor that will produce the highest torque of any ID vehicle yet. The ID.7 Pro has an estimated output of 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. The standard ID.7 will have a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) bias and feature dynamic chassis control (DCC) for three driver-selectable drive modes (Eco, Comfort, and Sport).
Based on the European WLTP test cycle, the ID.7 Pro will have approximately 382 miles of all-electric range. We anticipate that the more rigorous EPA test to knock that figure down to earth, but consumers can still expect a 300-plus jaunt from a fully-charged ID.7 Pro. Volkswagen has not provided charging times but stated that the Pro model can charge at 170 kW on a DC fast charger.
Volkswagen also announced that the extended-range ID.7 Pro S will arrive at a later date for the European market (and presumably North America as well). The Pro S will likely be equipped with an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration as well as get a dual-motor setup and a 86.0-kWh (91.0-kWh gross) battery combo. The ID.7 Pro S has a Volkswagen-estimated AER of 435 miles on the WLTP test and will be capable of up to 200 kW of DC fast-charging capability. No word on its performance specs, but Volkswagen did say that an AWD-equipped ID.7 will reach 60 mph within five seconds.
Interior
Volkswagen considers the ID.7 a midsize sedan, but its dimensions are borderline full-size. Sitting on a 116.8-inch wheelbase, the ID.7 measures 195.3 inches in total length. That’s 3.3 inches longer than VW’s full-size sedan, the Arteon. Suffice it to say, the ID.7 interior is on the spacious side. The automaker hasn’t released interior dimensions, but during a global reveal event, the ID.7 interior is simple yet striking. Even with only a prototype vehicle as an example, the ID.7’s fit and finish were worthy of a final-production sign-off. A standard panoramic sunroof with electro-chromic dimming glass will bring natural light into the ID.7 cabin for that sense of spaciousness.
There is seating for five, but the rear seats will be a cozy ride for three average-sized adults. The flat floor does add legroom and comfort, even for the middle-seat passenger. For example, with the front seat pushed all the way back, a six-foot-one passenger in the front can comfortably stretch out and still not crush the knees of a five-foot-eight rear passenger. There was at least a couple of inches of space in our non-scientific eyeball test. However, with three passengers in the back seat, the shoulder room is essentially nil.
The ID.7 seats are an all-new design and, for the first time in a Volkswagen, can be optioned with a massage function. The optional ergoActive front seats will enhance driving comfort while also minimizing travel fatigue. The new seats offer up to 14 power adjustments, up to 12 air cushions, and multiple massage settings that can be programmed between 10 and 30 minutes long. Additionally, the intensity of the available heating and ventilation settings can be adjusted separately between the seat bottom cushion and backrest. Heated rear seats will also be an available option.
Technology
As the new flagship vehicle, the 2025 ID.7 is not without some Volkswagen firsts. Among them is the automaker’s first-ever standard augmented reality (AR) head-up display. Supplementing the new AR display and digital instrument cluster will be a new 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. With a floating design, the next-generation center display features an updated user interface that includes new graphics and a menu structure. Equipped with the latest operating system, the IDA voice assistant can recognize natural voice commands to operate a host of features, including the sunroof, climate control, ambient lighting (30 colors!), and cloud-based questions such as for weather and traffic.
For music fans, an available 700-watt, 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system will provide 16 channels of surround sound bliss. The audio system will offer four pre-configured sound settings (Pure, Relax, Speech, and Vibrant) and have a sound focus that can be directed toward any seat. This means drivers can tune the sound system to literally surround their seat and only their seat.
Safety
A full list of standard and available safety features will be released closer to the ID.7's on-sale date. What we do know now is that the ID.7 will offer advanced driver-assistance systems like parking assistance and assisted lane changing. With the former, the ID.7 will take over final parking duties while the driver either remains in the vehicle or monitors from outside the vehicle. The latter is when the vehicle will automatically change lanes when commanded and safe to do so.
Pricing
Volkswagen has yet to release pricing or a sales date for the 2025 ID.7, but the vehicle is expected to arrive in the US sometime in 2024. The ID.7 for Europe and the US will be manufactured in Volkswagen’s Emden, Germany, plant where the ID.4 is also built.
