The Porsche Macan is an upscale small crossover that rivals the likes of the Audi Q3 and the BMW X3. It’s available with the choice of a few different turbocharged powertrains to suit different budgets and performance desires.
What’s New for the 2023 Porsche Macan
The Porsche Macan was last refreshed in 2019 and is part of a generation that dates back to dates back to its 2015 introduction, though Porsche consistently updates tech features and powertrain options. For 2023, the Macan gets a new mid-tier trim, the Macan T, and Porsche updates the list of standard and available safety features.
Design
The Porsche Macan’s styling hasn’t been updated since 2019, and even then, that was a refresh rather than a full redesign. Though the Macan is starting to look a little dated, it’s still fine in the way that it wears the brand’s classic cues with grace. The new Macan T trim gets specific trim elements, as do the high-performance S and GTS models. The Macan GTS makes the most interesting style statement with bits like a sport exhaust system and 21-inch wheels.
Powertrain
The Macan and Macan T get a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine, rated for 261 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Macan S and Macan GTS get a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine, rated for 375 hp and 383 lb-ft in the former and 434 hp and 405 lb-ft in the latter.
All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard across the lineup, along with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Macan has a maximum tow rating of 4,405 pounds when properly equipped.
With the inline-four engine, the Macan is rated for 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The Macan S drops to 17 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined, and the GTS model is rated for 17 mpg city, 22 highway, and 19 combined.
Interior
The Macan offers seating for five on cloth upholstery with leather trim, and power-adjustable and heated front seats. Porsche also offers heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and cooled front seats.
The cabin looks upscale and has high build quality, though it isn’t especially spacious. Rear passengers are likely to fell cramped, and there are just 17.2 cubic feet of space in the cargo area, which is below average for the class.
Technology
The 2023 Macan comes standard with a 10.9-inch touch infotainment display, navigation, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi connection, four USB-C ports, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Tech options include Bose or Burmester stereo upgrades and wireless phone charging. While wireless Apple CarPlay comes standard, Android Auto is not available at all, which is a notable drawback.
Safety
The Porsche Macan has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it does come with advanced driver-assistance features. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard. The list of available safety features includes a 360-degree camera system, forward collision warning, lane-change assist, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, and park assist.
Pricing
The 2023 Porsche Macan is available now. As of this writing, Porsche starts the Macan lineup at $57,500 for the base model, which includes the 261-horsepower engine, cloth and leather upholstery, a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The Macan T is new for 2023 and starts at $63,100 with upgrades like front sport seats and the Sport Chrono package. For $68,400, the Macan S gets the twin-turbocharged V6 engine, leather upholstery, and a sport suspension system. The Macan GTS costs $82,900 and has a more powerful twin-turbocharged V6, a sport exhaust, and 21-inch wheels, among other features.
