The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of those rare luxury SUVs that still delivers rugged capability and true off-road performance. It delivers these attributes while still maintaining a level of comfort and luxury worthy of the Mercedes logo. The G-Class has boxy styling that indicates the sturdy construction within. Closing one of its doors is like shutting a bank vault. It provides seating for five and up to 68.6 cubic feet of cargo space. The G-Class (or “G-Wagen,” as it’s known) has largely had the same format since its inception in 1979. The current generation arrived in 2018, and it was slightly updated for the 2021 model year. Those changes carry over into 2022.
The G-Class is offered in two variants, the G550 and the AMG G63. Standard features on the G550 include leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote start, power-adjustable front seats, three-zone climate control, and ambient cabin lighting with 64 color options. It also comes standard with a fully digital instrument panel and a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The AMG G63 adds more aggressive styling, wireless device charging, a more potent engine, and high-performance running gear.
You can set up the G550 to have the look of the G63 with the AMG-Line Package. It adds sportier styling elements, a sport steering wheel, larger wheels, and a performance exhaust.
Both the G550 and the AMG G63 feature a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine. In the G550, it puts out 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The handcrafted version of this engine in the AMG G63 puts out 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Both engines route power through a nine-speed automatic to full-time four-wheel drive (4WD). The AMG variant can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
While that straight-line power is impressive, the G-Wagen stands out for its off-road prowess. It features three locking differentials, low-range gearing, and plenty of ground clearance. The AMG G63 features high-performance brakes and an adaptive, sport-tuned suspension.
The G550 returns fuel economy of 14 mpg city, 17 highway, and 16 combined, while the AMG G63 returns fuel economy of 13 mpg city, 16 highway, and 14 combined. The G-Class requires premium fuel.
The G-Wagen’s list of standard safety features is extensive. It includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parallel and perpendicular parking assist. The G-Class also features Car-to-X communication, which allows it to communicate with other properly equipped vehicles. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is backed by a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.
