The 2021 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid blends the frugality and sensibility of a compact car with the efficiency of a hybrid powertrain. This marks the first year of the hybrid variant for the Elantra. Despite its hybrid drivetrain, the Elantra Hybrid looks a lot like the conventionally-powered Elantra, which is to say, not very conventional at all. Its head-turning design gives way to a spacious interior and a generous 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space.
The Elantra Hybrid is available in two trims: the efficiency-focused Blue and the more content-rich Limited. The Blue comes with a hands-free opening trunk, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Blue is also available with a Premium package that adds split-folding rear seats, a power-adjustable front seat, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system.
Moving up to the Limited adds wireless device charging, ventilated front seats, leather-trimmed seats, and a larger 10.25-inch touch screen. The Limited also comes with a fully digital instrument panel of equal size.
Both cars come with a host of driver-assistance features, including forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and pedestrian detection. Also standard is Safe Exit Assist, which uses sensors to determine if there is approaching traffic before you open the door.
The Elantra Hybrid combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. The setup is good for 139 horsepower and 159 pound-feet of torque. The Blue trim is more efficiency-focused and makes less power, at 104 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of trim, the Elantra Hybrid routes power to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The EPA rates fuel economy at 49 mpg city, 52 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined. The Elantra Hybrid Blue returns 53 mpg city, 56 mpg highway, and 54 mpg combined.
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has a base MSRP of $23,550 for the Blue trim. The Limited starts at $28,100. The Elantra Hybrid is backed by an impressive 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
