The 4 Series soldiers on into 2020 without any major changes. It offers some minor styling and options tweaks.
The 4 Series designation encompasses three distinct body styles: convertible, coupe, and Gran Coupe. While the convertible's folding hardtop sacrifices both rear-seat and trunk space, it gives the car a nice clean look when it’s in use and provides greater levels of noise insulation than a soft top. Next, there’s the 2-door coupe, which offers comfort and seat space for all four occupants. Finally, the Gran Coupe effortlessly blends a coupe roofline with four doors. The Gran Coupe even features a power rear tailgate in place of a trunk, which combines with standard 40/20/40 folding seats to create a maximum of 45.9 cubic feet. All three body styles come in Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport style variants, the last of which features an aerodynamic body kit, sportier seats, and a performance steering wheel. For 2020, there are newly darkened taillights as well as fresh paint finishes, wheel options, and leather appointments all around. Keen shoppers will note that the M Sport look now includes a high-gloss black grille surround standard.
Whichever body style you choose, BMW offers two performance tiers for the 4 Series. The base 430i gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, which makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission transmits power to the rear wheels or, optionally, all four. The 430i hits 60 mph in a reasonable 5.5 seconds and delivers fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city, 34 highway, and 27 combined for the coupe.
Of course, you can step up to the 440i. Not only does it get the M Sport look standard, but it also comes with a potent turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine capable of 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. While the same 8-speed automatic transmission comes standard, a crisp 6-speed manual unit is available. Getting to 60 mph in the 440i Coupe takes just 4.8 seconds, and you’ll enjoy fuel economy of 22, 30, and 25. Opting for the Track Handling Package adds performance tires, beefier brakes, enhanced steering, and a sportier suspension.
Standard amenities in the 4 Series include full LED exterior lighting, power-folding side mirrors, leatherette upholstery, 10-way power front seats with power side bolsters, a 9-speaker sound system, HD Radio, keyless start, an 8.8-inch infotainment system with navigation, and ambient lighting. You can add genuine leather upholstery, adaptive full LED headlights, heated front seats, a head-up display (HUD), wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a power rear sunshade, and a heated steering wheel.
In terms of safety, you’ll find rear parking sensors and a reversing camera on every vehicle. The Executive Package incorporates side- and top-view camera feeds. Other safety add-ons consist of blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a parking assistant. The 4 Series has not been crash-tested by any major external agency.
BMW’s 4 Series brings style and elegance at a reasonable price.
