2019 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo Reviews, Pricing & Specs
Write a review
The 6 Series Gran Turismo replaced the 5 Series Gran Turismo in 2018, making 2019 its second year--and one with no notable updates.
In BMW parlance, “Gran Turismo” designates a sedan that’s been raised and lengthened, and then given a rear hatch in place of a traditional trunk. Such is the case for the 6 Series Gran Turismo, which is a more practical take on the 5 Series sedan. The former has almost 4 inches of legroom over the latter. A roofline that’s two inches taller improves rear headroom. The 6 Series Gran Coupe benefits from features like a standard 40/20/40 split-folding seat that, when folded, accommodates up to 65 cubic feet of cargo space.
The sharply styled BMW comes in one specification, 640i xDrive Gran Turismo. This features a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, sending power to an 8-speed automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes. It also includes BMW’s “xDrive” intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD) system. The 640i xDrive Gran Turismo can hit 60 miles per hour in a brisk 5.1 seconds, run to a top speed of 155 miles per hour with optional equipment, and deliver fuel economy ratings of 20 miles per gallon city, 28 highway, and 23 combined on premium fuel.
The 6 Series Gran Turismo comes in Sport Line, Luxury, and M Sport trims. The basic Sport Line defines the model’s sleek, understated lines. The Luxury differs only in offering a few extra exterior chrome accents. The M Sport version includes an aggressive aero kit that pays homage to BMW’s iconic M cars, aluminum interior trim, and plenty of M badges.
BMW equips every 6 Series Gran Turismo with a generous list of standard features, including 19-inch alloy wheels, rear air suspension, dual-zone climate control, adaptive LED headlights, automatic high beams, power-folding heated mirrors, 18-way power front seats, memory settings, leather upholstery, a leatherette-wrapped dashboard, a 12-speaker, 205-watt sound system, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay connectivity (but not Android Auto), keyless access and start, ambient lighting with 11 different designs, and a 10.2-inch infotainment system with touchscreen and controller inputs.
Beyond the standard list, there are several add-on packages and features. The Dynamic Handling Package comes with active steering, dynamic damper control, and active-roll stabilization. The Luxury Seating Package adds ergonomic multi-contour heated and cooled front seats. A heated steering wheel, a rear-seat entertainment system, soft-close automatic doors, a heated steering wheel, rear heated seats, and ceramic controls are among the available a la carte options.
The 6 Series Gran Turismo is as committed to safety as it is sport and luxury. In addition to a reversing camera, the standard Active Driving Assistant Package bundles forward-collision warning with automatic low-speed mitigation, speed limit recognition, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Available Driving Assistance Plus package tacks on adaptive cruise control with stop and go, active lane-keeping assist, forward cross-traffic alert, traffic-jam assist, and evasion aid, which helps the driver in maneuvering to a clear lane if an obstacle appears in front of the car. There are also wild features like parallel and perpendicular self-parking, a 360-degree camera system, and remote control parking that allows the driver to use an LCD-equipped key to instruct the car to pull in and out of tight spaces, while standing outside it. The model hasn’t been crash tested, but several other recent BMWs, including the related 5 Series, earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The 6 Series Gran Turismo takes the athleticism of BMW’s sedans and puts it into a package that’s easier to get in and out of and with more space, making it a half step between a sedan and a crossover, like the X5. If that sounds like an appealing package to you, put the 6 Series Gran Turismo on your shortlist.
