The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been a benchmark for luxury. Now it comes in two more flavors. In addition to the S-Class 4-door sedan, the 2017 S-Class Coupe is available as a 2-door hard-top or a cabriolet. Both offer the same high-end fit and finish, luxe appointments, and class-leading technology expected from this Mercedes flagship, with a slightly sportier appearance.
The S-Class Coupe hard-top and cabriolet are largely similar vehicles, with slight variations depending on the choice of roof. The cabriolets have some unique features for top-down motoring, including an Airscarf heater built into the front headrests, an Aircap air-deflection setup, and windshield washers designed to prevent fluid from spraying inside the car when the top is down.
With the sheer volume of options available, from cabin fragrance systems to rapid-heating front seats, Mercedes can configure your S-Class Coupe with all the features you want—and many you didn’t know existed. A Sport package available for the cabriolets (which comes standard on hard-tops) includes 19-inch AMG wheels, sport body styling, and brushed aluminum pedals. Swarovski-crystal headlight accents are standard on the AMG S65 trim and optional on other trim levels.
For the S-Class Coupe’s interior, you can select the Premium package for a heads-up display, massaging front seats, and a surround-view camera. The Warmth and Comfort package adds heated rear seats, heated armrests, heated door panels, and a heated wood and leather steering wheel. Other options include an upgraded Burmester sound system, a rear-seat refrigerator (available only in hard-tops), and a Driver Assistance package with a host of active safety features.
The S-Class Coupe starts with the S550 trim level, which puts a biturbo 4.7-liter V8 engine capable of 449 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque under its long hood. The S550 Cabriolet (base MSRP of $131,400) comes with rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the S550 4matic hard-top ($122,750) gets Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Both cars use a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and are EPA rated at 17 mpg city, 25 highway, and 20 combined.
Step up to the S63 AMG 4Matic ($164,750) or Cabriolet ($176,400) for an AMG-specific design—including optional carbon-fiber trim—to go along with the handcrafted biturbo 5.5-liter V8 pumping out 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Both the S63 hard-top and Cabriolet come with 4Matic AWD, a paddle-shifter-equipped 7-speed transmission, and an AMG-only steering wheel, along with a number of available options. The AMG S63 hard-top is EPA rated at 15, 23, and 18, while the Cabriolet’s numbers drop slightly to 14, 22, and 17.
The range-topping S65 AMG hardtop ($236,250) and Cabriolet ($247,900) trims both pack a hand-built biturbo 6-liter V12 engine—a rarity in a modern vehicle and proof that the S65 AMG is entering supercar territory—that puts out a whopping 612 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. Nearly every single option from the AMG S63 comes standard on the AMG S65, although a carbon-ceramic brake system remains an $8,950 option. The AMG S65 is available only with RWD and is EPA rated at 13, 21, and 16.
