In the modern car market, the personal commuter coupe is something of a dying breed. This was once a segment dominated by cars like the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Ford Thunderbird, and other American models. Then Japan took its turn, with coupe versions of the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and others. What remains is the Honda Accord Coupe, a prime example of how some things are just better with fewer doors.
Like its sedan counterpart, the Accord Coupe is in its ninth generation. It was first shown in its current generation at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It featured the same crisp lines and angles of the sedan, and both were updated with more advanced LED headlight clusters and a revised grille and taillights.
Trims for the Accord Coupe are the LX-S, EX, EX-L, EX-L V6, and Touring. The base trim comes standard with a chrome-tipped exhaust, dual-zone automatic climate control, an i-MID trip computer screen, Bluetooth hands-free calling, Bluetooth streaming audio, Pandora capability, SMS text message functionality, and an auxiliary audio jack. The base stereo is a 160-watt 6-speaker system, while all others feature a 360-watt 7-speaker premium audio system.
All trims but the base LX-S are also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. By now, you have likely heard of these systems, which offer easy-to-use operation of paired smartphones via the center touchscreen.
That touchscreen is part of the Accord Coupe’s two-tier infotainment system. The lower touchscreen allows operation of the audio, phone, and available navigation controls, as well as various vehicle settings. The menus and screens for these various functions, including the navigation display, appear on the upper screen. This system is not the most intuitive and may take some getting used to, but it's somewhat more ergonomic than past iterations.
The navigation system is available on EX-L and EX-L V6 trims and comes standard on the Touring. It includes real-time traffic updates and has an enhanced voice-recognition system that includes the “song by voice” function, which allows you to ask questions about the music currently playing--like “Who’s this?” or “What album is this?”--which the system will answer by naming the artist or album.
Move up to the Touring and you get all the goodies standard, including push-button start, leather seating, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and auto-on/off high beams.
The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) making 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. EX-L V6 and Touring trims come with a 3.5-liter V6 putting out 278 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque. LX-S, EX, and EX-L V6 trims come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. The EX-L comes with a continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters, which is also available on the LX-S and EX. A 6-speed automatic is available on the EX-L V6 and standard on the Touring. Fuel economy for I4 trims with the manual is 23 mpg city/32 highway/26 combined. With the CVT, that rises to 26/34/29. The EX-L V6 with the manual gets 18/28/21, and the V6 with the automatic gets 21/32/24.
The Accord Coupe comes standard with a full array of front and side airbags, vehicle-stability assist with traction control, antilock braking, electronic brake-force distribution, a multi-angle rear-view camera with guidelines, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. All trims also come standard with Honda LaneWatch: like a rear-view camera for your right passenger-side blind spot, LaneWatch monitors the space on the right side of the car and presents the image live on one of the digital screens. It activates with the flip of the right-side turn signal and even has guidelines for determining how close a vehicle is in the lane to your right.
Standard on the Touring and available on all other trims is a suite of advanced safety technologies called Honda Sensing. This array of equipment includes adaptive cruise control that will automatically match the speed of the car in front of it, a collision-mitigation braking system, lane-keeping assist, and a road-departure warning system. Together, these technologies ensure you have a greater chance of avoiding an accident by notifying you of the unexpected or alerting you if you become distracted while driving.
Base MSRP for the 2017 Honda Accord Coupe is $24,025 for an LX-S with a manual transmission. An EX will set you back $26,150, while an EX-L will cost $28,995 before options. The EX-L V6 starts at $31,175, and a range-topping Touring trim costs $34,375.
On paper, the notion of a coupe based on a family sedan might sound sedate. But the Honda Accord Coupe has strong DNA, ensuring this 2-door 4-seater will be fun to drive in the daily commute. It also has the comfort and safety features to get you through that commute with peace of mind. Give us the EX-L V6 with the 6-speed manual and we’ll have one truly enjoyable commuter coupe!

2017 Honda Accord coupe is an amazing car very reliable very fast. Absolutely love it I keep it covered with a UV protection so it stays looking brand new. I highly recommend covering your car even if it’s garage and when you uncover your car you get a new appreciation of how beautiful it really is. With the paddle shifters on this LXS I don’t hardly even have to use the brakes in fact I haven’t had to change the pads yet and I bought the car with 19,000 miles on it now there’s 57,000 miles on it. After a TON of research I picked up a V6 Touring automatic. Its by far the nicest car Ive ever owned and I could not be happier.
What I appreciate:
Its built really well, feels rock solid and the power pushes you back in the seat. If you ever need to pass a car youll leave it in your dust in no time.
The Sports mode is NICE!! It revs much higher, is a lot more responsive but is hard on gas so I only use it in the city.
Great on gas! On the highway it turn off cylinders and my best has been 7.6 km/100km. I like the fact it runs on regular so no need to spend more at the pump.
Awesome stability. When going fast around turns it handles and tracks well.
The lights in the doors are nice and shine on the ground when open.
The lanewatch camera is awesome! When activated it shows you everything in the right side of the car.
The ride is very smooth. Sporty suspension setup.
I appreciate the clean and classy design.
Tons of legroom. Im 64 and have more space than I would ever need. It also helps to be able to lower the seat.
Things I donyt like or care for:
The sensing features are nice but I hardly ever use them. The lanekeep assist is a bit finicky because the painted lines need to be very clear.
The collision avoidance system can be jarring, especially when going the road turns right and theres an oncoming car. The flashing dash light and vibrating steering wheel can be a bit scary when you dont expect it. The wireless charger is useless for larger phones since it the opening for the phone compartment is quite small. The Android connectivity is a nice thought but it renders some of the steering wheel controls useless so I dont bother.
Whoever designed the lights in the dash didnt put a lot of thought into it. Theres a general yellow light that comes on in addition to others. If youre low on gas, not only will you see the regular fuel light but the other general comes on as well. Makes no sense and is confusing because it makes you think something else is wrong.
Despite a few negative comments about things that are not really that important to me I highly recommend this car if you can find one, especially the V6.Sep 02, 2021

Great car so far. Counting on the Honda reputation for quality. Economy looks promising, good acceleration, handling and ride. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto seem acceptable, Ive never had them before.
