Sexy and sinful, Nissan’s 370Z remains an affordable alternative to the Euro-dominated sports coupes and roadsters that cater to the extraordinarily well-heeled. This Asian athlete returns for the 2016 model year in traditional 3-door hatchback coupe and 2-door roadster (convertible) configurations, with both iterations offering intimate seating for 2, but little in the way of practicality. However, for some comparatively low-cost driving fun, this midsize warm-weather commuter scooter remains a distinct frontrunner.
The 2016 370Z Coupe is again offered in 5 trim variations: the base 370Z, the performance-laden Sport, the up-featured Sport Tech, the top-shelf Touring, and the uber-sporty Nismo, which also comes as the goody-packed Nismo Tech sub-trim. The Roadster, boasting a power-opening soft-top roof, returns in base, Touring, and Touring Sport versions, with all iterations, both hardtop and convertible, delivered only with rear-wheel drive (RWD).
After a hefty reworking of the current generation, the upcoming 370Z variations, which already adorn dealer showrooms, see few noteworthy changes. Expect a new exterior color, Deep Blue Pearl, to debut for 2016 editions, along with a noise-canceling upgrade to the Bose premium audio system that comes standard in higher trims. Nissan, obviously in response to customer complaints, also claims to have slimmed down the front windshield pillars for better cornering sightlines.
Power-wise, look for the 2016 370Z in all but Nismo form to return packing a standard 332-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that manages 270 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the 7-speed SynchroRev auto-manual transmission, boasting steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and downshift rev matching, also remains available to all trims. Mileage in Coupe editions sporting the stick-shift remains an estimated 18 mpg city/26 highway/21 combined, with the auto-manual-toting Coupe again estimated at 19/26/21. The Roadster with the manual transmission, meantime, boasts 17/24/20, while the auto-manual-equipped version is estimated at 18/25/21.
The up-powered Nismo, meantime, again totes a grunt-enhanced version of the 3.7-liter V6 that also totes either the 6-speed stick-shift transmission or the available 7-speed auto-manual to pound out 350 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque. Again, mileage numbers for the Nismo-dedicated V6 powerplant are expected to be unavailable as a separate estimate.
Depending on the trim selected, appearance bling for the 2016 370Z is slated to remain 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, and spoilers in front and rear, while the Roadster, as mentioned, additionally boasts a power-operated fabric convertible roof. The 370Z in Sport and Sport Tech variations, additionally, comes with a limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes to bolster its playful image.
Inside, again depending on your choice of trim, look for this spiffy Nissan to offer cloth or leather upholstery, heated sport seats, cruise control, full power accessories, and a tilt-only steering wheel. Automatic climate control, furthermore, is still standard across the 370Z lineup, with higher trims adding a rear-view camera, a remote garage door opener, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
Tech features in the base 370Z for 2016 are again scheduled to include Bluetooth hands-free calling and a single-CD/MP3 player with 4 speakers and an auxiliary audio input. Tech-designated trims, meanwhile, boast a standard infotainment system with a 7-inch display, along with GPS navigation and the aforementioned upgraded Bose premium audio system that sports Bluetooth streaming audio and 240 watts of power blasting through 8 speakers.
Of course, in keeping with tradition, lower-echelon 370Z variations remain eligible for available equipment that’s standard aboard higher trims, while again, a number of dealer-installed accessories, including illuminated kick plates and carpeted floor mats, round out the list of optional add-ons for the upcoming year.
Standard safety stuff aboard all 2016 370Z variants includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, side-mounted airbags, head curtain airbags, high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, and daytime running lights. Additionally, a remote antitheft alarm is also a standard security feature, lineup-wide. It should be noted, by the way, that this heady Nissan sportster remains untested by either the government or by the insurance industry.
Finally, look for the 2016 370Z to again challenge Ford's legendary Mustang, Chevy’s resurgent Camaro, Scion’s unexpectedly exciting FR-S, and Subaru’s surprisingly competent BRZ in the value-oriented sports-car wars.
