Those who feel the standard-length Infiniti Q70 isn’t quite roomy enough can rejoice in the fact that for 2015, this snazzy, if somewhat under-styled 5-passenger midsize luxury sedan debuts in a stretched version, appropriately dubbed, the Q70L. The regular-length Q70, offered as a replacement for the once-flagship M sedan atop the Infiniti brand listings, sports even more rear-seat legroom in its elongated Q70L version but, curiously, the same 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space.
Boasting a pair of power-parsed trims – the base Q70L 3.7 and the potent Q70L 5.6 – this elongated version sports a 120-inch wheelbase, as compared to the non-L’s 114.2 inches, and an overall length of 202-inches as opposed to 196.1 inches for the standard Q70. Thus, an already roomy cabin becomes downright palatial, especially when you consider the posh packed inside.
Like its bite-sized Q70 brethren, the introductory Q70L comes with standard 18-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, and heated power-folding and power-adjustable mirrors outside. The cabin sports standard leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, full power accessories and memory for driver's settings. Both Q70L trims carry an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control and telescoping tilt-wheel steering, as well as a remote garage door opener and rear-view camera. Both trims also sport dual-zone auto climate control, while the 3.7 version offers a standard 7-inch touchscreen display that handles Bluetooth hands-free calling, as well as a single-CD player with 6 speakers, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio input.
The up-featured Q70L 5.6, meantime, boasts such added bling as a heated steering wheel, a multi-view camera system, Infiniti Connect directions and connections services and a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, with both the Infiniti Connect and the upgraded stereo interfaced with an 8-inch touchscreen.
Options, meanwhile, are almost exclusively in package form and include a 16-speaker Bose audio upgrade, a sport-tuned suspension and beefed-up brakes, upgraded and upsized wheels with performance tires, sport front seats and a sport steering wheel. A rear spoiler, meanwhile, is the only noteworthy standalone option.
Furthermore, both 2015 Q70L trims are offered with standard rear-wheel drive (RWD), but like its sub-sized sibling, both can be delivered with intelligent all-wheel drive (iAWD). The iAWD system allows cruising in fuel-efficient RWD under normal circumstances as it stands ready to divert torque from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip when heavy weather turns roads treacherous.
Reflecting its entry-level status, the Q70L 3.7 trim packs a 3.7-liter V6 engine as standard equipment. Under the management of the 7-speed auto-manual transmission, this peppy 6-cylinder puts out 330 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, with EPA-estimated mileage running 18 mpg city/26 highway in RWD versions and 18/24 in AWD editions.
Need more oomph? Check out the Q70L 5.6 with its 416-hp 5.6-liter V8 powerplant. Again under the management of the 7-speed auto-manual transmission, this potent V8 puts 414 lb-ft of torque at your disposal, but estimated mileage figures drop to 16/24 in RWD variants and 16/23 in AWD iterations.
Again reflecting its standard-length brethren, both trim variants of the stretched-out Q70L boast the touted Infiniti Drive Mode Selector with 4 settings – Standard, Sport, Snow and Eco – that can be utilized to tweak throttle response and shift points to reflect conditions of both mind and road.
Finally, standard safety features aboard each 2015 Q70L includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), front and rear head airbags, front side-mounted airbags and front head-restraint-whiplash-protection. Standard high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights and front fog/driving lights, not to mention a post-collision safety system and a remote antitheft alarm, also come standard in each iteration. Infiniti Connect emergency telematics are additionally standard in the 5.6 trim, while both trims stand eligible for an available Technology Package that features adaptive HID headlights, front and rear collision alerts and braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warnings, blind-spot monitoring and cornering assistance (Trace Control).
