Despite a hiatus long enough to ensure nobody driving today really remembers what a FIAT used to be, drivers approached the 2012 re-launch of an Italian favorite with much caution given its partnership with Chrysler. One year, a few tweaks and a Turbo trim addition later, those concerns are proving unfounded, with drivers of the 2012 500 saying "it's built like a tank." Mechanics who do remember the old FIAT say "it's nothing like the ones I used to work on" with a "solid build quality" offering ample fun, versatility and pep. Looks like MINI finally has some serious competition while Smart works on its reputation—even before considering the lineup-wide tweaks for 2013.
The new Turbo 500 antes up with some sporty cosmetics and the same sport suspension and steering as the Sport 500, but as the name implies, the same 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine used in every other 500 is tweaked up to 135 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque thanks to a turbo boost—as opposed to the 101 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque in naturally aspirated versions, or 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque for the likewise turbocharged high-performance Abarth. The entire 500 lineup was revised for 2013, notably offering up to 31 mpg city/40 highway and improved power thanks to renewed gear ratios. Specifics on the new Turbo amount to a promise of up to 34 mpg highway, and the Abarth appears unchanged in terms of its similar economy promise, although the Abarth, too, surely benefits from the tweaks to its lone 5-speed manual transmission choice.
This renewed 5-speed manual is available across the entire 500 lineup for 2013, with a 6-speed automatic optional regardless of whether you choose the Pop, Sport, Lounge or Turbo trim. So far only the Pop and Lounge are confirmed for both hatchback and 500c convertible body styles, with the Sport and Abarth still available only as a hatchback and the Turbo expected to follow suit. Several new customizations open up with the addition of the Turbo, including 2 new exterior color choices and newly available premium leather seating for the Sport and Turbo. Last but certainly not least on the list of 2013 changes is the addition of studio-quality sound, with the 500's segment-first installment of Beats by Dr. Dre.
All of that would be impressive enough of its own accord if it wasn't for driver reviews. Entry and exit for even large passengers is remarkably easy, with drivers praising the 500's every innovation to the subcompact standard, from instrumentation to cargo capacity, elbow room and ride quality. Materials quality isn't as high as that of a MINI, but the 500 also isn't as pricey and compares favorably to others in this price range. A little bigger than the smart fortwo, the 500 offers seating for 4 with 9.5 cubic feet for cargo before folding down the seats to open up a similarly impressive 30.2 cubes—the convertible compromising only rearward visibility when retracted. The 500 is no speed demon, requiring as much as 12 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standstill, but if you don't mind sacrificing about 6 mpg, the Abarth does the job in a swift 7.1 seconds with a more robust tone and compliant ride than any rival.

As a professional mechanic and car enthusiast, the Fiat 500 models including the Sport model have a beautiful interiors and very nice styling. Unfortunately, the automatic transmission model is either extremely outdated or generally low-performance. As the gears shift the vehicle lurches creating an experience I could do without.Jan 15, 2023

I currently have a 2021 Ram 1500 and 2018 Chrysler 300S that I bought new. I bought this 2013 Fiat 500 as a “beater” to go back and forth to work only. I’ve owned it about a month and keep making excuses to drive it. It is TINY. If you need space for 3+ people or large bags, this is not the vehicle for you. If you’re 6’3” or under, you will be surprised how much room there is. I have as much headroom in this as I do in my full size pickup truck. This car is almost 9 years old and everything works as it should. Also, be prepared to get looks from everyone, especially if you’re a 200 pound guy. So many people smile and give thumbs up to this tiny thing, it’s a blast!
If I could change one thing about this car it would be more horsepower. If you want to pass someone you have to commit well in advance because even floored, this thing is slow. But I am coming from two vehicles with 400hp Hemi engines so maybe others will be fine with the slow acceleration. This thing is definitely quick and nimble on the back roads once you get it up to speed though.
I’m very happy with purchasing this car and plan to add an aftermarket head unit to add Apple CarPlay and navigation. Dec 25, 2021

I was more than surprised at the acceleration after reading a few negative reviews. I’ve driven V8’s for years. When I hit the gas to get on the freeway, it had more than enough power to hit 70 on the on ramp. Overall, the car is a lot more than I expected out of that little 4 cylinder! At around 35mpg on the automatic model, it’s the perfect 2nd vehicle to my 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban! Highly recommend you drive it before you listen to everything you read. This car was actually great. It was perfect for me which is why I bought it. This little Fiat 500 is the Abarth model created with a performance package: Turbo, enabled braking system, responsive handling with tight steering, dual exhaust. It has leather performance driving seats and the car is about as close to a rally car there is. It takes corners quick and clean. Acceleration is very good in the 5 speed manual 1.4 liter vehicle and then when the turbo kicks in, hang on! I really don’t have an equal comparison to make but this car fits like a glove, actually has a surprising amount of space for driver and front passenger. It’s a cabriolet/convertible as well and just is so much FUN to drive on the interstates, country roads and just cruising around town. I can’t stress the word FUN enough either. I just love it. In the case of the 500c Abarth it really has to do with Fun. The size is right the horsepower to weight is good. The convertible is just to fun except you cant see behind you with the top down, thank God for side mirrors. They seem to hold up as Ive seen examples with well over 100K and still up again for sale. I love maneuvering in this car. It’s zippy, fun, fast and cute. The stereo system in the 2013 model is horrible, especially after owning a 2012 model where Bose was the stock system. The arm rest always breaks on this car and the plastics use d in the interior are cheap and break easy. I love the car but they definitely skimped on some features in the later years. Jan 03, 2021

The Abarth is the most fun Ive ever had in a car. It has been very reliable and more dependable than my BMW or GTI. I like the fact that its unrefined, it actually doesnt feel sterile and is all about the motor and driving experience. It has the feel of a cheap car, the overall build quality is questionable. Its one of those cars that you either love it or hate it and thus the market value tends to be on the low side.
With that said it does get good mpg and if you like a nostalgic looking car then this is one to consider.

The 2013 Fiat Abarth is an outstanding little vehicle that can get you from point A to B in a short amount of time due to its sport mode, which will boost 18psi while maintaining a good fuel economy and great handling. The interior is surprisingly big.Sep 15, 2014

How fast it was on Sunoco 91-93 oct gas and the cool turbo noises it made with the open Sila short ram intake, that it provided extra hp & cfm's over stock & the exhaust tone. Everywhere I go people look at it with the 500 Madness red custom vinyl stripe.

So my wife had been asking me to look at the new FIAT 500, I was really down on the idea of owning a FIAT 500. I had seen them back in 2009 when i was living in Italy and they were cool but didnt really interest me.
So the one day we were driving past the dealership and i asked if she wanted to go look at some. She said yes so we went on our journey. We were walking around and there were a few that were nice and the salesman asked if i wanted to take a sport non turbo out. So we took it out and i was really surprised how nice it drove for a small vehicle. Nothing super impressive but I liked the idea and i thought it was nicer than my mini cooper that i had.
So we get back and we are looking around and the salesman asks me if i want to look inside the Abarth. Me, being a car guy said, 'yeah lets do it.' the interior was amazing, i was really surprised on how the car really was developed with the beats audio system and all the other toys. it felt like a micro race car. I start to walk away and the salesman said you didn't even hear the best part....
???? He started it up, and all i heard was this deep throaty sound, reminiscence of miniature Ferrari, all i could think was 'how did they make a 1.4t sound like that' my heart dropped and i couldn't believe it.
So we are very specific people owning over 30 cars in the last 15 years, we wanted the white one with the red seats. We search the lot and no luck, so we are really disappointed, well the salesman says, 'wait we have three in the back in a garage.' So we walk in and there it is the first one in the room with three. White with red interior, so we are about 90 percent sold at this point, well we were going to lunch to think about it and they told us to take the abarth and get a good feel for it.
Well lest say its on my list of cars i own. It is a great vehicle and my wife has been getting 40+ miles per gallon in it, which is way higher than what it claims it gets.
This is a truly special car, and right now we are restoring our fiat x1/9 to resemble this beautiful piece of machinery.Jun 15, 2013

Rented two of these in the past few months, they get great fuel mileage. Easy to enter and exit. Seats are nice the, 6 speed auto is great to have fun with in sport mode. Will run at speeds with no problems. Pulls hills with ease. Back seat should not exist as it is too small for any adult. Radio controls are confusing.May 26, 2013
