You want a civilized sedan. He wants a sporty crossover SUV. What you need is the 2012 Infiniti EX35. Why? It's the perfect solution. The EX35 has everything you want in a car, and it has more than he will find in most SUVs out there. The Infiniti EX35 comes appointed with enough luxury to satisfy the car lover in you and enough muscular acceleration and cargo room so your other half won’t have to hand in his man card.
Introduced in 2008, the carryover design of the 2012 Infiniti EX35 comes in two trims, Base and Journey, both with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Infiniti’s Intelligent All Wheel Drive system senses road conditions and can send up to 50 percent of available power to the front wheels when you need it most. This advanced AWD system monitors wheelspin, throttle position and speed and can help you gain more traction in icy or snowy conditions. Clearly, it’s more intelligent than most drivers in bad weather. The Infiniti EX35 comes with a strapping 297-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine and 7-speed automatic transmission. The EX35 runs on premium gas and is rated at 17 mpg city/25 highway. You won’t find that in many other SUVs.
The EX35 comes standard with many items that are premium options for other vehicles, like leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic temperature control, smart-key access with push-button ignition, rear heating and air conditioning, and USB/iPod ports. With the Journey, you get more standard equipment, including a power moonroof, power tilt/telescopic steering column, maple interior accents, Bluetooth hands-free phone system and an auto-dimming inside mirror with Homelink Universal Transceiver, which can control compatible garage doors and home security systems. Only with the Journey trim can you can get the Premium, Deluxe Touring and Technology Packages.
Unfortunately, all the option packages stack on top of one another but offer many premium options found on only a few upscale sedans and SUVs. For instance, if you order the EX35 Journey with the Premium Package, you can get Infiniti’s hard-drive navigation system, Around View Monitor (front and rear sonar, no less) and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. That also makes the Deluxe Touring Package available, which features adaptive front lighting, seats with memory for two occupants, power-folding second-row seats and a coat hanger on the driver’s headrest. How civilized is that? Once you are at that level, you can also get the Technology Package, which adds intelligent cruise control, a lane-departure warning system, distance control and a blind-spot warning system.
The Infiniti EX35’s cabin details are first rate with many soft-touch surfaces. Leather seats are standard in the EX35, as is real wood trim. Most controls are included on the 7-inch dashboard screen and easy to use. Climate and audio controls are mounted separately below the nav screen, and the lane-departure warning system is mounted on the steering wheel. The cabin is fairly luxurious, but it can be noisy with engine growl during acceleration. The EX35's ride is smooth and comfortable, but expect a stiffer ride on the optional 19-inch wheels in the Deluxe Touring package.
Cargo space is quite generous, and loading is aided by the low rear hatch and second-row seats that fold nearly flat. The EX35 has a large glovebox and center console, but rather small door storage pockets. Rear visibility is occluded by small rear windows and the backseat headrests, but the addition of oversize side mirrors helps. This is where the optional Around View Monitoring comes in handy, as it displays four views of the vehicle on the navigation screen.
Standard safety features for all Infiniti cars include antilock brakes, traction control, an antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, front seat active head restraints that help prevent whiplash and a LATCH system for child seats. Also included is an online guide called SnugKids, which helps you select and correctly install a child restraint for your Infiniti vehicle.
No one has to compromise on what they want with the 2012 Infiniti EX35. Similar to its cousin the Infiniti G Sedan, the EX35 is a roomy, smart choice in a crossover SUV that offers a lot of the styling and luxury of a sedan. On this you can both agree.
